Birds are Disappearing

Holly,
We live on 5 rural acres in west Georgia. Normally our yard and trees are filled with birds and birdsongs of every type. However, this year, there are no birds! Once in a while we will hear a lone bird, but the silence is eerie.
Also, my square foot garden is thriving, with a noticeable decline in pesky bugs this year. The only things I am having to use to keep pests manageable are garlic flakes and food grade diatomaceous earth. It is nothing like the battle I usually have.
There was a big hoopla in 2007 about declining birds, but then I didn't hear much about it. So I started looking, and am sending you some more recent links. It appears the loss is worldwide. And it appears the US media ia not giving it the attention it screams for. Most of my information has come from UK links.
Backyard Birds are Disappearing – Note especially the comments after this Houston blog post:
UK Wild Bird Numbers Continue to Fall
Spring May Lose Song of Cuckoos, Nightingales and Turtle Doves
Wading Bird Numbers in Rapid Decline Across Europe, Africa and Asia
I could send dozens more links, but this should be enough to alert you to the problem.
Thanks for listening.

Blogger Dee note:
I have noticed a lack of birds around here in South Florida too. We used to have many of all different types, but now there are a only few mockingbirds and some doves, much less than usual. They seem sluggish, and not prone to singing much these past couple of weeks especially.
