Tropical Storm Katia forecast to be a Category 3 hurricane
Tropical Storm Katia emerged near the Cape Verde Islands on Tuesday morning and began a long trek across the Atlantic. By Wednesday, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said, it could develop into a hurricane.
Over the next week, it is forecast to bulk up into a Category 3 hurricane, possibly stronger.
At 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Katia (pronounced KAH-tyah) was about 750 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, moving west-northwest at 20 mph. The storm's top sustained winds had increased throughout the day from 45 to 60 mph.
