Texas Ebola hospital worker is now in quarantine on cruise ship
A Texas hospital health worker who may have handled fluid samples from Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan has been quarantined aboard a Carnival cruise ship in the Caribbean, officials said Friday.
The Texas Health Presbyterian hospital worker, who set sail from Galveston, Texas, on Oct. 12, did not have “direct contact” with Duncan and has not had a fever or any symptoms, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.
“The employee … may have had contact with clinical specimens collected from him,” Psaki said. “The individual was out of the country before being notified of CDC’s updated requirements for active monitoring. At the time the hospital employee left the country, CDC was requiring only self-monitoring.”
A doctor on the cruise ship has declared the woman symptom-free and in good health. It’s been 19 days since she handled Duncan’s fluid samples — two days shy of the 21-day incubation period for Ebola.
Two nurses at the hospital, where Duncan died Oct. 8, have been infected by the virus. One of them, Amber Joy Vinson, traveled on a commercial flight to Cleveland, prompting concerns over the authorities’ handling of the outbreak in the United States.
The Carnival Magic was being held off the coast of Belize on Fridayuntil the hospital worker could be removed from the ship and returned to the United States.

“At this time, the guest remains in isolation on board the ship and is not deemed to be a risk to any guests or crew,” Carnival said in a statement. “It is important to reiterate that the individual has no symptoms and has been isolated in an extreme abundance of caution.”
The Belize government, however, turned down a request by the United States to evacuate the worker through the international airport in Belize City.
