We'll Keep Ebola Out by Letting West Africans In

(CNSNews.com) - "I don't have a philosophical objection necessarily to a travel ban, if that is the thing that is going to keep the American people safe," President Obama said on Thursday.

Obama said the experts have advised him that it's more effective to let West Africans into the U.S. than it would be to keep them out.

"The problem is that in all the discussions I've had thus far with experts in the field, experts in infectious disease, is that a travel ban is less effective than the measures that we are currently instituting, that involve screening passengers who are coming from West Africa."
Many more Ebola infected carriers and -- ISIS terrorists coming in through our open southern borders.  No travel ban there!

What Makes This Ebola Outbreak So Terrifying (And Why You Should Worry)
By James Cole - BioPrepper

On October 12 th , American news outlets reported that the death toll of the current incarnation of the Ebola virus has risen to 4,000. And despite the effort of the medical community, the final number could rise significantly above that. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, Ebola may claim as many as 20,000 lives by November, and may even hit 1 million by this time in 2015.

But what makes this Ebola scare so much more serious than any of its other outbreaks, which date back to 1970s, and have never gotten this far out of control?

Thanks in large part to the lowered risk of contagion, as well as the fact that most victims would die before they had a chance to spread the disease, past Ebola outbreaks have remained relatively small and well-contained. So what changed?

Location, Location, Location

One of the reasons why Ebola has remained so contained in the past is the fact that it has been contained to Central Africa. But this go-round, the outbreak struck much further west, in areas like Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. These areas had no experience dealing with or treating the disease, which left little chance of containing the outbreak before it got out of hand.

What’s more, urban areas have always served as an incubator for diseases of all kinds, and Ebola is no different. As the disease spread from rural areas with very small populations to cities like Freetown and Monrovia, which boast a busier urban center and populations that creep towards the 1 million mark, the virus has simply had more opportunity to spread. That doesn’t bode particularly well for places like Texas, (with a population over 26 million) which recently saw its first Ebola death, followed by the confirmed diagnosis of nurse Nina Pham.

Poor Access to Health Care and Services

In the United States, there are about 250 citizens for every doctor. Compare this to the very stark contrast to be found in Central and West Africa, and you can begin to see why the disease was able to spread so rapidly within the cities. Sierra Leone and Liberia, in particular, had their infrastructure and health resources all but decimated by war in the early 2000s. In Liberia today, there is roughly one doctor for every 100,000 people. With this kind of lacking medical treatment, there was really no way to keep the outbreak contained.

Texas Ebola hospital worker Quarantined on cruise ship

Texas Ebola hospital worker is now in quarantine on cruise ship

A Texas hospital health worker who may have handled fluid samples from Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan has been quarantined aboard a Carnival cruise ship in the Caribbean, officials said Friday.
The Texas Health Presbyterian hospital worker, who set sail from Galveston, Texas, on Oct. 12, did not have “direct contact” with Duncan and has not had a fever or any symptoms, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.
“The employee … may have had contact with clinical specimens collected from him,” Psaki said. “The individual was out of the country before being notified of CDC’s updated requirements for active monitoring. At the time the hospital employee left the country, CDC was requiring only self-monitoring.”
A doctor on the cruise ship has declared the woman symptom-free and in good health. It’s been 19 days since she handled Duncan’s fluid samples — two days shy of the 21-day incubation period for Ebola.
Two nurses at the hospital, where Duncan died Oct. 8, have been infected by the virus. One of them, Amber Joy Vinson, traveled on a commercial flight to Cleveland, prompting concerns over the authorities’ handling of the outbreak in the United States.
The Carnival Magic was being held off the coast of Belize on Fridayuntil the hospital worker could be removed from the ship and returned to the United States.
“At this time, the guest remains in isolation on board the ship and is not deemed to be a risk to any guests or crew,” Carnival said in a statement. “It is important to reiterate that the individual has no symptoms and has been isolated in an extreme abundance of caution.”
The Belize government, however, turned down a request by the United States to evacuate the worker through the international airport in Belize City.

Travel Quarantine Quietly Ditched Four Years Ago

PRESIDENT EBOLA: In 2010 Obama Administration Quietly Scrapped CDC Quarantine Regulations Aimed At Ebola

Published on Oct 4, 2014
Four years ago, the administration of President Barack Obama moved with virtually no fanfare to abandon a comprehensive set of regulations which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had called essential to preventing international travelers from spreading deadly diseases inside the United States.

The CDC had proposed the regulations in 2005 under the administration of George W. Bush, reported USA Today in 2010. The original impetus for the regulations was fear that avian flu would spread unchecked. http://www.infowars.com/in-2010-obama...

The regulations, proposed in 2005 during the Bush administration amid fears of avian flu, would have given the federal government additional powers to detain sick airline passengers and those exposed to certain diseases. They also would have expanded requirements for airlines to report ill passengers to the CDC and mandated that airlines collect and maintain contact information for fliers in case they later needed to be traced as part of an investigation into an outbreak.

Back in 2007, the CDC recommended the regulations, saying it would “improve the agency’s ability to identify exposed passengers quickly.”
Then in 2010, under pressure from the ACLU and the airline industry, the Obama Administration secretly (or “quietly,” the article states, but what’s the difference?)  scrapped plans to give the feds the power to quarantine anybody exposed to certain diseases or who appear ill.
Now, however, thousands of passengers from the three affected African countries are permitted into the U.S. without any special screening.
The ACLU opened the door to Ebola.  Thanks a lot, ACLU.

Airline and civil liberties groups, which had opposed the rules, praised their withdrawal.

The Air Transport Association had decried them as imposing "unprecedented" regulations on airlines at costs they couldn't afford. "We think that the CDC was right to withdraw the proposed rule," association spokeswoman Elizabeth Merida said Thursday. Just too much trouble for the airlines.

The American Civil Liberties Union had objected to potential passenger privacy rights violations and the proposal's "provisional quarantine" rule. That rule would have allowed the CDC to detain people involuntarily for three business days if the agency believed they had certain diseases: pandemic flu, infectious tuberculosis, plague, cholera, SARS, smallpox, yellow fever, diphtheria or viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

"The fact that they're backing away from this very coercive style of quarantine is good news," said ACLU legislative counsel Christopher Calabrese, who was unaware the proposed rules had been withdrawn.

CDC officials had stressed the rules would only be used in rare circumstances when someone posed a threat and refused to cooperate. The new rules, they noted at the time, added legal protections and appeals for those subject to quarantines.

CDC spokeswoman Christine Pearson said in a statement Thursday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC's parent agency, withdrew the proposed regulations after discussion across the government made it clear that "further revision and reconsideration is necessary to update the regulations."

....
They probably learned during H1N1 that this hope of preventing diseases from entering the country by stationing people at airports is unrealistic," she said.

In 2007, after an Atlanta man with drug-resistant tuberculosis drew international attention to the potential risks posed by infected air travelers, CDC Director Julie Gerberding testified before Congress that the proposed regulations (now scrapped) would improve the agency's ability to identify exposed passengers quickly. Gerberding, now president of Merck Vaccines, was unavailable for comment Thursday.
