Western MT earthquake felt hundreds of miles away

NORTHWEST MONTANA HEADLINES Posted: Nov 11, 2011 1:41 PM by Mark Thorsell (KPAX/KAJ Media Center)  Updated: Nov 11, 2011 1:42 PM MISSOULA- Friday morning's magnitude 3.3 earthquake that struck western Montana sure has a lot of people talking. We've received several emails and folks also commented about the small trembler on our Facebook page talking about the relatively unusual event. The quake hit at 10:51 a.m., 13 miles southeast of Clinton, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The size of the quake is considered small and the U.S.G.S. says these type of earth movements are "Often felt, but rarely causes damage". Nonetheless, the U.S.G.S. website is reporting that the quake was felt nearly 200 miles away in Great Falls. It was felt across most of western Montana, from Thompson Falls to Corvallis. Meanwhile a post on our Facebook Page from Karly Anderson said that: "My house literaly shifted twice! Granted it's 90 years old but I had to been close to the source living 13 miles up Miller Creek Rd!" Sherry Nugent posted that she felt the shaking in in Lolo and that her "couch is moving back and forth it wasn't someone stomping up the stairs". Some folks reported feeling the ground shake for a few seconds and seeing windows rattle in Missoula. We have not received any reports of damage.
