Big Brother just got scarier: Japanese CCTV camera can scan 36 million faces per second
UK Daily Mail | The technology raises the spectre of governments – or other organisations – being able to ‘find’ anyone instantly simply using a passport photo or a Facebook profile. The ‘trick’ is that the camera ‘processes’ faces as it records, so that all faces which pass in front of it are recorded and stored instantly. Faces are stored as a searchable ‘biometric’ record, storing the unique

Gary Herbert signed legislation Friday demanding that Congress turn over roughly 30 million acres of federal land within Utah’s borders — a move that proponents acknowledge could lead to a court battle…"It’s gotten [to be] more federal intrusion, more federal refusal to allow us to decide our own destiny," Hatch said. "We’re so completely overlorded with federal bureaucrats that we can’t do the things we know we ought to do."
Hatch said there are vast oil, gas and oil shale resources that the federal government has refused to allow to be developed.(All is well when uncle sugar pays you off)

Internet threatens Mormon Mall:(Mormon owned MallCity Creek’s Taubman: Internet stirs malls, threatens them
Salt Lake Tribune-- Internet competition forces changes, sales-tax issue imperils future of traditional retail…owns and operates City Creek Center that opened Thursday, spoke Friday in Salt Lake City during the International Council of Shopping Centers, Mountain States Idea Exchange. The global trade association of 50,000 members supports legislation before Congress that would permit states to require retailers to collect taxes from Internet sales…U.S. shopping centers, pointed to City Creek as an example. The 700,000-square-foot City Creek offers shoppers a variety of amenities, including retractable roofs, a 1,200-foot-long re-creation of the city’s historic creek, two 18-foot-waterfalls, three fountains, an outdoor fireplace, children’s play areas and free wireless Internet access.
"City Creek keeps people entertained and connected, it gives them a sense of place," he said, adding that in a technology-driven world, "shopping centers can no longer rely on great brands to be competitive."
But there is more to the City Creek story, he said. Taubman noted that his company began consulting nearly a decade ago with representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who were facing the issue of a downtown deteriorating just outside the faith’s world headquarters. "The church was facing a tough situation," he said. "Their intentions were to improve the downtown and stabilize and upgrade [properties] outside their front door.
"the problem can be fixed only on the federal level."

Baird told KSL the numbers are skewed. "More than 70 percent of the people that get a background check in the state of Utah to carry a concealed weapon are people from out of state," Baird said…Troy Herzog, was also not surprised by the ranking. "It would seem to me that you would have a high percentage of the population," Herzog said. "I think it's our Second Amendment right. It's an important thing and I don't see any problem with that."

(World's poorest countries) Surgeon from Nepal brings new cataract surgery method to U.S.
SNOWBIRD -- Though it may be counterintuitive, some of the top doctors in Utah have been learning surgical methods from a man who grew up in a tiny Himalayan village and still works in one of the world's poorest countries.
Dr. Sanduk Ruit an ophthalmologist in Kathmandu, Nepal has personally restored the sight of at least 100,000 blind people due to cataracts. In poor countries like Nepal, more people are living longer, but as they age, a vast number of them develop cataracts and go blind…He does cataract surgery much faster, cheaper and almost as reliably as in high-tech countries"We could do it about seven times quicker than what you do here and for about one 30th of the cost that you spend here," Ruit said
