Mother of boy bitten by shark knew her son’s screams were serious

The Cicarelli family was on the shores of Boynton Beach on Wednesday when their vacation fun was interrupted by a scream from 9-year-old son Colton, who was playing in the water.
A few hours later the boy underwent emergency surgery for what a plastic surgeon at Delray Medical Center said was more than just a cut: It was likely a shark bite.
“He’s extremely lucky,” said Anthony Dardano, the plastic surgeon. “He will probably have full function of his foot.”
The Cicarelli family, from Roxbury, Conn., was visiting the children’s grandparents, who live in Delray Dunes.
“We feel very blessed,” Tanya Cicarelli said at a Thursday afternoon news conference at the hospital. “There are good people in the world.”
Cicarelli thanked everyone from the lifeguards who discovered Colton’s serious injury to other beach-goers who helped pack up the family car and to everyone at the hospital.
Plastic surgeon Anthony Dardano repaired severed tendons in a 9-year-old's foot after the boy was bitten by a shark near Boynton Beach, Fla. The surgery is expected to allow the boy to resume walking. WPTV-TV (West Palm Beach. Fla.) (4/18)
