Nuclear Radiation Over Washington DC?

A press release designed to inform residents of Washington, D.C. reads, “The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) will be flying a helicopter over portions of Washington, D.C., between Dec. 27, 2012, and Jan. 11, 2013. The radiation assessment will cover approximately 70 square miles and NNSA will complete the assessment using a helicopter equipped with remote gamma radiation sensing technology.”
“The helicopter will fly in a grid pattern over the areas, 150 feet or higher above the ground surface, at a speed of approximately 80 miles per hour. Flyovers will occur only during daylight hours and it is estimated to take about two weeks to complete the assessment.”
Part of the. stated mission reads; “to be responsible for the management and security of the nation’s nuclear weapons…responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad…along with other missions supporting the national security.”
It is interesting to discover that they are in process of flying over Washington, D.C. with a specialized twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter with gamma radiation detection technology.
The press releases states the purpose; “…to measure naturally occurring radiation…”, which is indeed part of what a gamma radiation detector does. What they don’t specifically tell us is that the same detectors will also pick up “not so naturally occurring” radiation, as in man-made nuclear materials??
I wonder what they are looking for, and if there is a specific threat or concern?
