Strong earthquake hits off northern Japan coast; no tsunami alert
A strong earthquake with a preliminiary magnitude of 5.7 struck off the coast of northeast Japan on Wednesday evening, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake, which struck at 11:25 p.m. (0225 GMT), was centered about 30 kilometers underground off the coast of northern Fukushima Prefecture.
There was no danger of tsunami, the agency said.
There were no initial reports of injuries or damage in the prefecture, said local police official Koichi Koyanagi. (AP)
