Earthquake Hits the North Country
Ellenburg, New York - January 9, 2006
Geese and ducks did not even scurry when a mini earthquake rattled this rural area this morning at 10:35, but nearly everyone in northern Clinton County felt the little shaker that had them wondering what hit them.
"It sounded like a gun shot. A few seconds later the whole house shook like it does when a snow comes off the roof. That's what I thought it was until I went to the post office and they said there had been an earthquake this morning," says John Martin.
The quake measured a force of 3.4 according to geologic survey. On inspection of homes in the Ellenburg area no damage has been reported so far.
At the Ellenburg Inn, the earthquake was the topic of the day.
"It actually felt like a snow plow hitting a building. It shook everyone up for a moment. We figured out what it was and everyone is cool now," says Philip Hollis.
Dr. Frank Revetta of SUNY Potsdam said there could have been more shocks following the 10:35 earthquake.
"They were probably too small to be felt. They were in the ones and twos, I think," says Revetta.
Revetta said that it takes several days to examine the readout. He has to determine just where the center of the quake was located, but he said it was near Ellenburg on the Canadian border.
