Is there something going on with the Pacific tectonic plate?

Terra Bites

Is there something going on with the Pacific tectonic plate that might be getting ready to, oh, you know...crack it?

More quakes down under (the equator) and now we read about the latest 6.3 quake down in Fiji.  Is the mid-Pacific rise about to give rise to more than just the normal growth of the Pacific plate?  That's in the area (great circle-wise) from the Bonin Islands of Japan down to Chile, right?

Or, to put the question in simpler form:  How big can the Pacific Plate get before it breaks of its own internally generated stresses?  I bet a magnitude 10 quake would really be something to tell the grandkids about - if there were any after such a thing.

Oh, and the California and Alaska shake maps continue active with lots of small quakes...

Extremely Rare Indiana Earthquake

An Earthquake in Indiana, Really?

indiana-earthquake-near-kokomo-30-dec-2010

Yes indeed, add this one to the list of earthquakes during this active 2010 year.
An earthquake, initially reported as a magnitude 4.2 struck at 7:55 AM local time, located 4.9 km (3 miles) below an innocent looking field between County Roads 1250E and 1330E, 13 miles east of Kokomo, Indiana.
Two observations about this earthquake are interesting. One, it was very shallow. Two, hardly any other earthquakes have ever occurred in this area before.
30 years ago, a small magnitude 3.0 was located near Portland, about 50 miles away. 6 years ago a magnitude 3.6 rumbled near Fairland, about 60 miles away. All totaled, only a very few number of earthquakes have shook the immediate region of northern Indiana during all of recorded history.
Although Indiana is nearly centered on the North American Plate, and is furthest away from tectonic plate boundaries 2,500 miles to the east and 2,000 miles to the west, there is a fault line, the Sharpsville falut (of unknown depth), located north of Indianapolis near Kokomo. There is the possibility that this earthquake is indicating that the fault is becoming active.
The earthquake serves as a reminder that they can happen just about anywhere, in places where they've never occurred before, and with zero warning.
Got earthquake insurance? ;=)

Excerpt-A 2011 Look Ahead: Nuclear Poker

From George Ure's Urban Survival -

A 2011 Look Ahead:

Nuclear Poker

I wasn't going to strain the brain, at least too much, this morning because so many
people are in a holiday-building mood.  But as I look at all the talk about what's ahead for 2011, there's a topic which keeps floating around the email inbox which deserves some serious discussion, so make sure the coffee is warm for this because this is almost news-magazine length here
.

We start with an informational note from a well-placed, but retired military source, who sends along some interesting background about the direction and possible
outcomes for nuclear weapons use in southwest Asia.
"George,
Since 'at least' 1990 the DoD has been worried about a nuke showdown between India and Pakistan. I participated in a major war game, and was in the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (aka 'nukes, bugs and gas) 'white cell.' An exercise 'white cell' provides factual guidance (in our case, things

like weapon effects in densely populated areas, local/global dispersal patterns, etc.) to the 'players' of the exercise in their respective areas of expertise.

First, it quickly became apparent (with 'real' former U.S. state department officials and then current U.S. DoD seniors playing) that US meddling in such a conflict could easily worsen the situation. The underlying religious animosity between the two nations almost necessitated that each not back
down in order to 'save face.'

Making matters worse, if America tried to intervene, Russia and China would resent our exercising an unwelcomed influence in 'their hemisphere.'

So superpower intervention could rapidly escalate a regional conflict into a global one. This prevented the US from preemptively 'taking out' either side's nukes with non-nuke strikes for all the obvious reasons. If the conflict ever reached a serious stage, it was likely that tactical nukes would first enter into the fray.

Keeping superpowers out of this mess was the tricky part.
Some of the key take-aways from a 'limited' India-Pakistan tactical WMD exchange (less than a dozen or so total low yield weapons):
- A nuke exchange would likely start in or around the Kas
hmir region. Without external pressure, the conflict would likely smolder out after each side exchanged sufficient blows in a relatively unoccupied area to 'save face.' Kashmir was viewed as the most obvious such place for military units to face off.

- The Himalayas would largely contain any resultant fallout, but trade winds (depending upon the time of year) could
push airborne radioactivity south toward the equatorial jet stream or even back to the west and the Middle East. If the fallout in fact reached the equator, it could easily be 'pumped' across the globe via the equatorial wind patterns -- not good for surface water, livestock and crops, not to mention people.

- N. Korea was seen as regionally destabilizing and continuously 'posturing' (like a rooster approaching a hen

house), but not insanely dangerous to the point of invading the South (they did not have nukes back then, but the games were set in 1997-8, when nukes were seen as 'possible' for the Communist state).

This 'game' ultimately resulted in my picking up an English translation of the the ancient Indian Mahabharata. Many have postulated that this ancient scriptural accounting in fact describes a nuclear war using manned flying machines. But here's the rub -- did one or more mightier minds of  that long ago time write down something that 'had' actually occurred, or (much like our very own Time Monks) were they able to somehow divine events 'yet to come,' writing down what today's scientific minds view as culturally steeped mythology but which they back then intended as a prophetic warning to those of us willing to listen)?
All of which would make a mighty fine "ponder with adequate scotch" until we come along to the headline on the Debka site this morning.  This is where the news edges over toward scary:

Gather round the poker table, we need to talk about this latest hand that's been dealt.

One line of thinking might be that one of the root causes for the war in the 'eastern' sandbox' (now playing in a 'Stan' near them)  has been to set up a war within Pakistan (remember, Benazir Bhutto was killed by assassins in 2007 perhaps partly for outing the murder of Osama bin Laden as reported, and perhaps as destabilizing effort).  Properly choreographed, this would set up the West seizing the Pakistani nuclear arsenal.  "For your own good" in Nanny State-ese.

Pakistan's 'Islamic Bomb' Has Stretched Its Nuclear Shadow As Far As The Sea Of Japan.: An article from: APS Diplomat News Service

Pakistan's nuclear bomb

The Rings of Allah (Award Winning Clash-of-Civilizations trilogy)

Fast forward to today's headline from Debka:  Their article reports that the actual weapons promised the Saudis "...are most probably held in Pakistan's nuclear air base at Kamra in the northern district of Attock. Pakistan has already sent the desert kingdom its latest version of the Ghauri-II missile after extending its range to 2,300 kilometers. "

My point being that although the weapons are promised they are held in Pakistan.

I think what may be in play here is that the Pakistanis, by promising the Saudis a couple of nukes - have in a sense taken out an 'insurance policy' which would make it very difficult for the US/West to go in and seize the Pakistani nuclear arsenal as things on the ground deteriorate in the region.

Where up until this latest move was revealed, the US might have been able to mount force and take nukes away from the Pakistanis, but to do so now - with this latest deal - would be viewed by the Saudis (read: big oil source) as a move to disarm them and since they have oil, they have leverage.

Indonesia is Crumbling and Sinking

Just as predicted by the STO Zetas

As predicted by the STO Zetas re start of 7 of 10, Indonesia is Crumbling and Sinking, gradually. Land movement is going on. The government has issued maps of land-movement danger zones since 2006.

Zeta's right again...I must say like Nancy.

Since this December 2010 alone, there have been numerous sinking lands in Indonesia. Trans-Sumatra Road, Trans-Kalimantan (Borneo) Road, and Trans-Sulawesi Road, have been experiencing some sinking/collapse. Some parts of Sumatra mountain ranges, Bukit Barisan (the longest one in SE Asia), are collapsing;  a mountain in West Java is cracking and due for a big collapse. Some houses were swallowed by sinkholes as deep as 15 metres or more. Some claimed lives and injuries.

Sinking and/or collapsing lands/hills/mountain ranges/bridges/roads have been happening for the past few years, with the fastest pace in December 2010 occurring throughout Indonesia. Some occurred simultaneously. Most were accompanied by heavy downpours. Some were due to apparent land movements, floods, and hurricane-force winds, some just confused people. Sinking depth varies from just tens cm to 50 metres.

Here's a report on just some of the numerous landslides and sinking lands in Indonesia per December 2010.

30 December 2010: Central JavaHill in Purbalingga Collapsed.

29 December 2010: Central JavaLandslides in Banyumas, Banjarnegara, and Purbalingga.
29 December 2010: Central JavaCave Maria, Banyu Urip Village of Tuntang, Semarang, collapsed.

29 December 2010: Central Java.A Dike of 32 metre long in Bedana Village of Kalibening, Banjarnegara collapsed.

29 December 2010: JakartaPengapuran Raya Street, Tambora, West Jakarta was broken. The broken concrete slabs were due to heavy traffic, it was thought.

28 December 2010: Central JavaBumiayu-Brebes Ring Road was closed due to partly collapsed bridge (sinkhole underneath).

27 December 2010: West JavaThe concrete body joining Balubur St. and Pasteur St. on Pasopati Flyover, Bandung, shifted, leaving a 10-cm gap. Rapid sinking has been happening all over Bandung.

23 December 2010: East JavaThe LAPINDO hot mud dike (11 metres high) burst again on 23 Decembe... (as observed by Indonesian scientists). The water of 50 cm high flooded a nearby village and a 200-m-long road. Some houses sank 2.5 metres deep.

22 December 2010: Central JavaLandslides in Brebes Injures Six and Destroys a house (Media Indonesia).  Location: Dukuh Kosambi, Jipang Village of Bantarkuwung, Brebes, Central Java.
22 December 2010: BaliFloods and landslides assault Northern Bali.

21 December 2010: Sulawesi

20 December 2010: Central JavaLandslides and Sinking Road Assault Pekalongan (Media Indonesia). Heavy Rain caused landslides in Pekalongan hills, destroying twenties houses. Six villages were isolated after the sinking of five road spots of 12 km long.

18 December 2010: East Java. Sinking and Rising Land in Madura Island A land of 100 metres wide and 200 metres long in Tlokoh Village of Kokop, Bangkalan, Madura, suddenly sank 10 metres deep. This bewildered the locals.

17 December 2010: Borneo (Kalimantan)A truck sank into Trans-Kalimantan roadside, in Anjir Serapat.

14 December 2010: West  Java. Mount Pancar cracked, due for big landslides. The landslides would affect the elite real estate of Sentul City (Beverly Block and Cikeruh River). A sinkhole (3 meter wide, 5 m deep) developed 716 meter above sea level (on the mountain).

14 December 2010: North SumatraTrans-Sumatra road keeps sinking. Bukit Barisan mountain ranges, in Sumatra (with some of its peaks reaching 3000 m high, running from North to South Sumatra) has also been collapsing in four spots
13 December 2010: Jakarta. Petojo VIJ Street Sank 50 km long, 6 m deep (Berita Jakarta). Cracks were then found on 15 houses. The residents have been worried if their houses would sink too. Being vigilant, they've been watching any signs of further sinking. Location: Kali Siantar, Cideng-Gambir, Central Jakarta. A researcher at LIPI (Indonesian State Science Foundation) Otto S.R. Ongkosongo warned that Jakarta was prone to the same disaster as that of Petojo, considering that the same thing happened before that to Bendungan Jago Street in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. Loss of land elevation has also threatened the progress of MRT (mass rapid transit) project in Jakarta due for completion in 2016.

13 December 2010: Bali. Cliff collapsed in Tampaksiring, Gianyar.

The road was thought to start sinking on 11 Dec. at 3 am. Before sinking, the road developed a hole of only 1 square metres the day before. It was speculated that the land was getting softer after heavy rains for a few days.

10 Desember 2010: Yogyakarta (Cenral Java). Sinking Road Created a giant sinkhole in Sleman, Yogyakarta(Media Indonesia). A large gaping hole (diameter: 10 m, depth: 10 m) was formed in Merapi Street, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The sinkhole forced the local goverment office of Sleman to close as the access road was cut off. The initial hole was only as large as an umbrella on Dec. 10, it was said, but at 9 pm on the same day, the hole was getting much wider and deeper.

diju, i just checked the elevation of jakarta.....oh man. i am assuming you probably have made peace with whats coming.

thanks you so much for reporting all this. because the media sure isn't. But i hope you are taking time for yourself and family as well.

what im about to say is really silly. but the z's hve said tht in disaster situations, stos are rescued when noone notices their absence. Given that this is probably the most informative piece of information we'll receive about the sinking of indonesia, i think we ought to atleast "wish/pray/be concerned/ whtever you wanna call it" for diju's safety. she'd be a great helping hand for ppl in the after time in tht area.
