After weeklong silence, Bulusan Volcano spews ash anew
Following a week of silence, restive Bulusan Volcano erupted anew Thursday, sending steam and ash 500 meters above the crater.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Thursday night said the eruption took place at 9:16 p.m.
"At 9:16 a.m. today, an ash explosion occurred at the summit crater of Bulusan Volcano. A grayish steam and ash column rose to about 500 meters above the crater rim and drifted south-southwest," it said in its website.
It said the event was recorded as an explosion-type volcanic earthquake preceded by a tremor type volcanic earthquake that lasted for 30 minutes and 50 seconds.
Field investigation carried out immediately after the explosion showed that no ashfall was observed beyond the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 remains enforced over Bulusan Volcano, and reminded the public not to enter the 4-km PDZ, which it said "is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions."
"Because of the prevailing wind direction, people residing in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ashfalls," it added.
Phivolcs also reminded civil aviation authorities to warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit, as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircraft.
It also said residents near valleys and river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and continuous rainfall. - KBK, GMANews.TV
