Deep sinkhole opens up in California yard

Sinkhole measures 4 feet by 3 feet and is 27 feet deep. LINDEN, CA - Now what to do? That's what a Linden family is pondering after a deep sinkhole opened up in their backyard this weekend. Robert Smith said they opened the blinds Sunday morning and saw the hole about 20 feet from the back of their Clements Road home. At first, they thought their dog had been busy but upon closer inspection, they saw how deep the hole is and realized that wasn't the case. Smith says the sinkhole measures 4 feet by 3 feet and is 27 feet deep. Photo courtesy Robert Smith There is an old abandoned well at most 10 feet away. Smith says they aren't sure what to do. They called the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department which got in contact with the county public works department which referred the Smiths to the local fire department. However, because the sinkhole is on private property, it appears the Smiths will have to figure out how to deal with the problem themselves. For the time being, they've put a rope around the hole to cordon it off. Smith says they hope to reach a geological purveyor on Monday to figure out how to proceed.
