Timely Tidings

Like millions around the world, I too am absolutely sick at heart over the senseless massacre of 27 innocents by gunman Adam Lanza at the Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, mostly first graders ages 6 and 7. When tragedy strikes, I often pray for the victim's families; but in this case, honestly, I find it hard to do so, mainly because it is difficult to even think about the horror. Forgive me. My own son Seth is 8, and our little Abby is 4. Both happily attend a nearby Christian school. I can't fathom the pain of the victim's families.
That said, because I am a minister and teacher of God's Book, I want to offer the same thoughts I shared with KDKA CBS Pittsburgh radio host Rob Pratte this past Sunday morning when he interviewed me about this nightmare.
Christmas is almost here, and although Jesus Christ wasn't born on December 25, this is still a time when the world ponders the Bethlehem Baby. Consider this. Shortly after our Savior's birth, the wicked King Herod, in a horrific attempt to crush a potential new rival to his throne, sent a band of Roman soldiers to Bethlehem's quiet streets to murder every child under 2-years-old.
History calls that infamous act, "The Slaughter of the Innocents."

As in Bethlehem, so at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Nearly 2,000 years ago Perfect Love (revealed by Jesus Christ in his descent to our dark world) and Absolute Hate (demonstrated by cruel King Herod's slaughter of babies) stood face to face. At Sandy Hook Elementary, 27-year-old first grade teacher Victoria Soto in Room 10 also made the supreme sacrifice. After hiding her students in cabinets and closets, she stood between them and the gunman.
"They're in the gym," Victoria said, before taking a bullet.
She's dead. They're not.
As countless tears flow, and as the world agonizes to make sense of this unspeakable tragedy, I hope you will seriously consider these biblical facts:
- Planet Earth has entered the final phases of a death struggle between the forces of love and evil. Compare John 3:16 with Revelation 12:12.
- "God is love" (1 John 4:8). He is not responsible for sin and death.
- Lucifer, a fallen angel (see Isaiah 14:12-14), now "the devil and Satan" (Revelation 12:9) is the Ultimate Evil behind all evil.
- The devil "is a murderer from the beginning" (John 8:44). Just like he "entered Judas" (Luke 22:3) and used him to betray his Master with a kiss (Matthew 26:49), even so does he still operate today through killing machines like Adam Lanza to carry out his infernal hatred against the Father, His Son, the Holy Spirit, and human beings that Jesus loves and died to save (Romans 5:8).
- Soon God will essentially proclaim, "Enough is enough!" "It is done!" (Revelation 16:17). Then Jesus Christ will then return to earth "in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory" (see Matthew 24:30) to put an end to Satan's rule.
"God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. And He that sat upon the throne said, 'Behold, I make all things new!' And He said to me, 'Write: For these words are true and faithful'" (Revelation 21:4,5).
May that Wonderful Day come soon!
