Disaster Prep Starts with Being Able to See in the Dark

HURRICANE SEASON STARTS TODAY, JUNE 1st!

Blogger Dee

This morning Eric, a termite company service man came to our home here in South Florida to do some spot treatments around our house. (it's also termite season here)  He was a well-informed, talkative man from whom I learned a lot about various subjects, not just termites. (keeping eyes and ears open, you tend to gain valuable information).

Among his tools was a beautiful large black "Maglite" flashlight about which he was enthusiastically happy to give us some details and pointers:

First of all, he says Maglites have a lifetime guarantee.

They come in various colors and sizes.

You can focus the beam down to a particular spot, illuminating the area like a spotlight!

Batteries are included.

The newer ones are better than the older models.

They have regular bulb models and LED bulb models.

The regular bulb models come with a spare bulb right in the flashlight!

The LED's do not come with a spare bulb as they are just about as expensive as a new flashlight, besides they last longer.

The newer LED models can be used as lanterns to light up a whole room or a tent, and a blinking function (a near strobe light effect), which also has an 'SOS' blinking mode, all obtained with just a twist of the end cap!

The mini-LED (Small enough for purse or pockets)  is more powerful in light output than the larger regular bulb Maglites!

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, but will update this page if I remember more.

We have to be prepared for a hurricane disaster here right now as the season just started, and having gone through Hurricane Andrew and the aftermath, I don't want to be caught short again! It was horrible.

Knowing that I can find reliable deals, bargains, guarantees, etc. from Amazon, I decided to search around for Maglites and came upon an interesting and informative review which I've posted here:

2.0 out of 5 stars Contains outdated 1st-gen Maglite LED flashlightsSeptember 15, 2010
This package (MagLite 3D Cell 3-Watt LED Flashlight with BONUS 2 AA Cell Flashlight) looks like a great deal, because it is cheaper than buying one 3-D and one 2-AA Maglite LED Flashlights separately. However, when I examined closer, the two Maglite LED flashlights contained in this package turn out to be old, first-generation products.

From the outside, those first-gen LED Maglite may look the same as 2nd-gen models. But the inside is a different story. Here are some important changes:

- LED light source:
The new Maglite flashlights (both 3-D and 2-AA models) use a Luxeon Rebel ES 3-Watt LED as light source. This LED is significantly brighter, whiter and more energy-efficient than the Lux-III 3-Watt LED used in 1st-gen Maglite.

- Heat Sinking:
The 2nd-gen models solved the thermal problem. Previous models over-heat easily, and their light dim down after just a few minute of operation.

- Power Management:
The new Maglite maintains consistent light output as long as battery voltage is high enough. When battery voltage falls too low, the light dims down gradually to conserve battery power. In contrast, the old Maglite will abruptly drop dead without warnings.

- Mulit-mode Electronic Switch (AA model only):
The new Maglite mini can operate in four different modes: Full Power / 25% power / blinking / S.O.S (... --- ...) This is activated by turning the switch off and then on again immediately.

How can you tell whether you're getting the old obsolete models, or the new improved models?
- On the side of the new package near the 3-D flashlight, there are several little white boxes containing specifications such as '104 lumens' and '72-hour'. The old package made no such claims.

- On the new package, it advertises "NEW Multi-Mode Electronic Switch" near the 2-AA flashlight. The old package made no such claims. Also, the new package shows four circles inside the box titled "MAG-LITE Technology". The old package only shows three circles (missing the green one).

- If you look straight into the front end of the flashlight (with the LED turned OFF, of course), the new Rebel ES LED has a rectangular substrate, and a clear dome that seems slightly off-center (check my Customer Image to see want I mean). The old Lux-III LED only shows a clear dome.

Bottom line:
Don't get taken. Look for the new 2nd-gen Maglite LED flashlights instead.
