Are the light bulbs you’re using hazardous to your health?
The last incandescent light bulb factory in the United States closed last year, putting a few hundred folks out of work. It closed because greenies were able to convince Congress to pass legislation that essentially banned Edison’s world-changing invention.
So now we’re faced with having no choice but to install CFLs and many households have already made the switch. Sure, the bulbs contain poisonous mercury, but the EPA and other assure us they are safe — unless they break. But they were kind enough to create a nice, long overview web page explaining how to deal with broken CFLs. They even included links to a three-page PDF with detailed recommendations. Might be a good idea to print enough copies so you can keep one in each room of your home for quick reference, just in case one breaks.
But let’s face it, they don’t break very often. So that means they’re safe, right. Maybe not.
Tests performed by Peter Braun, a scientist who tested CFLs at Berlin’s Alab Laboratory, indicate the bulbs contain cancer causing chemicals according to this story in The Telegraph.
Fears have been reignited about the safety of energy saving light bulbs after a group of scientists warned that they contain cancer causing chemicals.
Their report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.
Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin’s Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”
The bulbs are already widely used in the UK following EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year.
But the German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.
Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: “Electrical smog develops around these lamps.
So…we can’t buy inexpensive incandescent light bulbs any longer. Instead, we have to buy more expensive bulbs that will save energy by slowly killing us so we won’t use energy for all the extra decades we might have lived if we kept using incandescent bulbs.
It’s all making sense, now. Obama’s 800,000 new jobs aren’t really new jobs. They’re just new for the people who will replace all the folks keeling over from light bulb poisoning.
And with world-wide distribution of CFLs and some time, we might actually be able to reduce the Earth’s human population to levels not seen since BC turned to AD.
Just think how happy this is going to make all the tree-huggers and PETA types out there. Eden will be restored — few humans, lots of plants and animals.
Seriously, though, does this new information change your mind, or at least make you worry a bit about using CFLs? Do you think we stop using them? If so, what will be the alternative?

I remember going to Fort Myers, Florida some years back to visit Edison's winter home and seeing there, still lit, a light bulb made by Thomas Edison, that was over 100 years old. Yes, this ancient incandescent electric bulb, hanging on an old electrical cord in Edison's house, was still giving off light. Bet today's bulbs are programmed to burn out much quickly - even the 'energy efficient' "green" and dangerous fluorescent light bulbs. ~ Blogger

Chalk up another decisive win for environmentalists and the "green" movement.
ReplyDeleteOne more American industry moved offshore, a few thousand less American jobs, a little more control over our economy for the Chinese. Nobody really cares any more.
He was still giving off light. Programmed lamps today to bet on a lot so quickly burn gree energy efficient fluorescent lamps and dangerous.
