It happened around midnight near U.S. 30 and Oak Road in Plymouth.
A semi truck ran into the back of a tanker carrying 6,900 gallons of a substance called Napholite.
Police say it's similar to paint solvent and smells like gasoline.
Workers at Wal-Mart complained of headaches and dizziness and were told to go home.
Drivers were detoured away from Queen and Michigan Street, causing quite a stir.
One woman says traffic was a nightmare.
Sandra Bush says, "Oh my god, there were semi after semis and cars and everything trying to go every which way and they'd go there, go there, go this way. They were directing them all over."
The driver of the tanker suffered minor injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital.
Police reopened reopened both westbound lanes Friday afternoon and one eastbound lane.
The other eastbound lane won't be reopened until it's repaved early next week.
