Cheers and applause rang out as the young man was pulled from the rubble by emergency workers.
‘Yeah he’s my friend, my best friend,’ said the man who received the text message after his friend emerged from the mound of debris.
‘I just got a message and he said I’m stuck. He said I’m here and we got him,’ he told local station KTUL.
The man had been trapped in the remains of a building in the heart of the city on the cross between 20th street and Connecticut Avenue.
Video footage shows the man in a t-shirt and jeans being helped out of the mound of rubble by firemen and other rescue workers.

Emergency workers said they had rescued seven people on Monday as the death toll rose to 116 people.
Search and rescue efforts are continuing throughout the city of 50,000 people about 160 miles south of Kansas City.
Much of its south side has been levelled, with churches, schools, businesses and homes reduced to ruins by winds of up to 198 mph.
Governor Jay Nixon said he was ‘optimistic that there are still lives out there to be saved’.
