Two part emergency press conference by Miami-Dade County mayor:
We live in the evacuation zone of Dade County. East side of U.S. 1 in SouthWest Dade.
But we're staying put. Got good shutters, new roof, and no big trees.
Lorrie is down in the Keys helping Manny get his trawler out of the water at the Marathon Marina.. then they'll return up here, possibly staying with us in our house. Bruce left early this morning to get gas for his truck, and then to help friends and family to board up. Jenny, who comes over on Thursdays to help me with housework, had to take her husband's big van at 2:00 A.M. to go get gas! First time she ever drove it! Her husband was exhausted from working at the hardware store selling hurricane supplies with hardly a breakand fell sound asleep- so she had to do it!
I can hardly believe what I'm hearing and seeing on the above videos.. it's like a re-run of Hurricane Andrew. Bridges will be shut down at 3:00 A.M. Last night we had a very hard time finding gasoline; most stations had run out, and the others were lined up out in the street. We were blessed and found one near home with hi test gas and one short line available - just for us!
As soon as Roy gets home at 2:00 PM today, he's going to go over to Tom's house to help him put up his shutters. Then we have to clear every loose thing out of our yard, throw it it into the shed, (like there's room in there) dismantle our infra-red sauna and put it in the house. I'm already exhausted!
