(109 quakes; the largest 3.6)  New Zealand - Christchurch braces for worst post-quake winter yet. Christchurch health and social agencies say they are bracing themselves for the worst post-quake winter yet, as the effects of influenza, bitter weather, stress and "shameful" living conditions compound.  Clamour for survival kits - Panicked Aucklanders have been snapping up emergency kits in the wake of last Sunday's earthquakes. Some suppliers of survival packs have reported a 300 per cent increase in sales from the Auckland region this week.  Louisiana sinkhole update - ‘Very long period’ tremors increasing at giant Louisiana sinkhole – Indicates gas and ‘liquid’ moving underground.  All work has been ceased at the Bayou Corne sinkhole after monitoring systems detected tremors Friday morning.  The Office of Conservation and the Assumption Parish Incident Command detected elevated subsurface activity in the area around a massive 13-acre sinkhole. Seismic monitoring also detected water movement in the slurry as well as increased bubbling on the western side of the sinkhole. Experts say a brine cavern drilled into the underground Napoleonville salt dome may have caused the sinkhole after it collapsed. 350 residents in a nearby town have been evacuated as a result of the slurry area. Texas Brine mines caverns into the dome to harvest salt and the resulting brine mixture is then piped to nearby petrochemical companies. Jindal has also laid out a contingency plan for a second Texas Brine cavern, known as Oxy-Geismar 1, which experts say may have been drilled too close to the edge of the salt dome. Jindal said there is no data indicating a second cavern collapse is imminent. "The seismic activity is limited to the Oxy 3/sinkhole area, showing no indication of impact to the Oxy 1 area. Earthquake Summary, 2011, first-quarter

We are now a quarter the way through the year 2011, and it is time for a world update on earthquake numbers with relation to some historical averages.

Geological reference times are quite long, and modern day seismic monitoring systems are just that, modern day – relatively speaking. The USGS posts annual average earthquake numbers since 1990, so, that is what we will compare our results against.

Annual Average number of earthquakes since 1990
Magnitude 5 – 5.9 (1,319)
Magnitude 6 – 6.9 (134)
Magnitude 7 – 7.9 (14)
Magnitude 8+ (1)

One way to compare numbers is to calculate a year-to-date average number. As the year progresses, the numbers will become increasingly accurate.

Historical average number of earthquakes through the 90′th day of the year, since 1990,
Magnitude 5 – 5.9 (325)
Magnitude 6 – 6.9 (33)
Magnitude 7 – 7.9 (4)
Magnitude 8 + (0.25)

As of the 90′th day of 2011,
Magnitude 5 – 5.9 (754) 232 percent of ‘normal’
Magnitude 6 – 6.9 (80) 242 percent of ‘normal’
Magnitude 7 – 7.9 (7) 199 percent of ‘normal’
Magnitude 8 + (1) ‘normal’

Clearly, the Great Quake of Japan, magnitude 9.0, has increased the total number of lower magnitude earthquakes due to the large number of aftershocks.

It also looks like it may be another ‘above average’ year – time will tell. 2010 Earthquakes were above average as well.

By next Monday, or so, we ought to either have huge amounts of "release language" flying about surrounding something like a major West Coast earthquake, OR we'll have to confront the possibility that the lingusitics around the date were processing artifact.  My money is on events.
 

"Why?"

Well, much of my concern has to do with the plasma expansion model of how and why earth is growing.  The idea is - vastly simplified - that the earth via some unknown mechanism, but having something to do with being a big energy absorber of the Sun's output, may be growing over time.  As ingeologic timescales and that this is the cause (along with complex magma fluid dynamics, of all the earth changes.

As one geology grad told me a while back - the focus on the plate tectonic theory was a relatively new thing, having arisen in the 1950's which got me to thinking perhaps there's more to earthquakes than tectonics.

All of which just went onto the back burner to simmer, until this morning when I wasn't even going to mention having lots of food and water ready for this weekend - just in case - until a reader who's touring Europe with his wife who reads this column (here comes a very bad pun!) religiously and sent the following email:

This piece of artwork clearly shows that The Vatican understood the Expando Planet reality in 1990 when this was installed in their garden. Fun . . . huh?

After staring at it for a while two thoughts came to mind.  One was that the Vatican artwork above could have been a dire warning about abusing our bodies with too much of...whatever your favorite excess is.  There's a certain uncanny relationship to the look of my eyes, now and then, for instance.

On the other hand, we have noted with the PowersThatBe often warnings come hidden in plain sightbefore major events.

And example of this is the famous Simpsons episode which conspiracy investigators think was a "hidden in plain sight" hint of 9/11 being in the works.

I don't claim that a major West Coast earthquake will strike late this week or possibly over the weekend.  More likely:  Much language has been floating on the net about the big FEMA National Lever Exercise which willbe called the "Great Central US Shake Out"

Obviously, as we get closer to the event, scheduled for April 28th, the linguistics around this will begin to spin up dramatically - so maybe  (hopefully?) it will just be the language with descriptive imagery of the 1812 quake (and related language) popping into the public consciousness.

Still, we continue to be troubled with last fall's FEMA requests for proposals (RFP's)  for a) 7.2 million MRE's and b) an RFQ for something like 10-million bottles of water in the region.

If I really let monkeymind out of the box, I can find plenty of other reasons for worry.  Like this email, for example:

"Found this on Space Weather and am thinking about what Clif stated re 25/3:

"HERE COMES TROUBLE? A big sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeastern limb, and it is crackling with activity. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a surge of extreme ultraviolet radiation from the sunspot's magnetic canopy on March 21st"

Not much to do but wait, I suppose. I'm hoping, obviously, that this is just the linguistic scanning system pulling NLE chatter out...but it isn't that simple and the sophistication of the underlying code would likely trap that out.

Still, with three major (over 6.0) quakes off Japan this morning, here's hoping the linguistics are wrong.

FEMA,NOAA, Run Solar Storm Worst Case Scenario, Earth's Next Katrina

That was their conclusion after participating in a tabletop exercise that looked at what might happen today if the Earth were struck by a solar storm as intense as the huge storms that occurred in 1921 and 1859. 


Solar storms happen when an eruption or explosion on the surface of the sun sends radiation or electrically charged particles toward Earth. Minor storms are common and can light up the Earth’s Northern skies and interfere with radio signals. Every few decades, though, the sun experiences a particularly large storm. These can release as much energy as 1 billion hydrogen bombs.

Google "South Atlantic Anomaly" - It's a 3000 mile hole in the magnetic field protecting earth. The earth is responding, trying to repair as this happens with eruptions from volcanoes. • From the graphic illustration of the planet's magnetic layout, it appears that there would be a HOLE at the top and bottom.

  QUESTION, it the pole shift tilts so much that the HOLE is FACING THE SUN, does that mean we will be BOMBARDED with solar radiation on BOTH sides as the Earth rotates in front of the Sun? ...Or does the hole provide some sort of protection itself?

  THAT's the question I want answered by scientists! -- How 'bout you guys?

Just found this story on Fox news of all places! Looks like the Magnetic Pole Shift is gaining momentum -

The Earth's magnetic field is changing at an increasing rate, throwing off airports and altering the aurora borealis -- and its effect on ordinary compasses could mean the difference between homeward bound and hopelessly lost

Earth’s northernmost magnetic point -- or magnetic north -- is distinct from its geographic North Pole, and scientists have long known that the magnetic poles are on the move

But the magnetic poles have been moving faster lately, sliding towards Siberia at 34 miles per year at a speed that's accelerated 36 percent over the last 10 years, according to the United States Geological Survey, or USGS

Depending on location and journey length, unaware hikers or boaters could find themselves hundreds of miles off course if they don’t calibrate for the shift, experts said

The magnetic shift is costing the aviation and marine industries millions of dollars to upgrade navigational systems and charts, Floridas Sun Sentinelreported.

The polar shift is directly related to the movement of Earth’s magnetic field, which in turn, is related to the movement of Earth’s liquid iron core. The core is in a constant state of convection, or the transfer of heat within fluids. Since the core is convecting, it produces what Love referred to as a “naturally occurring electrical conductor.” And with electric current comes the magnetic field.

Fluctuations in the magnetic field have occurred for hundreds of thousands of years, so the shifting pole doesn’t exactly worry scientists. Sometimes the movement is slow, sometimes fast. The rapidity of the change has to do with the amount of activity going on in the earth’s core. But over time, the axel pole and the magnetic pole eventually equal one another

Add to the ever evolving nature of Earth’s magnetism the fact that the overall magnetic field has been decreasing as well. Scientists have only been able to measure the intensity of the field since the 1830s, but ever since then, its strength has been on the decline, having decreased by about 10% since it was first measured. But for those concerned with this polar shift -- or even a possible polar reversal -- Love says there is no need to worry in our lifetime 

Looks like no need to worry in our lifetime, but none the less, a very concerning and interesting story. What will the future hold with a decreasing Magnetic field? What implications would this have on a technology dependant society that frequently encounters Solar flares, CME's etc. 

What would be the implications of changing poles? 

Could this process speed up faster than scientists actually know of?
