Antarctic Danger: Ice Shelf Cracks Close British Base … Again

Growing cracks in an Antarctic ice shelf have forced the closure of a mobile British research station for a second winter, although it was relocated earlier this year to avoid the danger of being cast adrift.


It will be the second winter in a row that Halley VI has been shut for the season because of the danger that the station could be cut off by two growing cracks in the 490-foot-thick (150 meters) floating ice shelf.

Britain's Halley VI research station is being towed to a new location 
on an ice shelf in Antarctica, to avoid a growing chasm that 
threatens to cut it adrift. 


The eight modular buildings of the base are equipped with hydraulic legs 
and skis so they can be moved. But, this is the first time that the Halley VI 
base has been relocated since it was first assembled in 2012.

In new official advice, the department warned: "Although there's no recent history of terrorism in the British Antarctic Territory, attacks can't be ruled out,What a F^%$ing JOKE!!!

China's colossal red icebreaker, the Xuelong or Snow Dragon, embarked on a 155-day expedition to Antarctica on Thursday. The voyage marks China's 30th trip to the continent, and many of the 256 crew are scientists hunting meteorites. Also onboard are construction materials to establish the country's fourth Antarctic research station, Taishan, which is to be located in Australian-claimed territory, a vast area of East Antarctica that houses an unknown wealth of coal, iron ores, manganese and hydrocarbon.

The Chinese icebreaker in the Antarctic, the Snow Dragon, is trying to maneuver through the heavy ice, after getting trapped in it. On Friday, the vessel helped rescue 52 passengers from a Russian ship that had been trapped in the ice since December.

China has selected a location for its first-ever airfield in Antarctica, which is to facilitate Beijing’s research efforts on the frozen continent. It is also considering establishing its fifth Antarctic base there next year, local media report.
The site selected for the future runway is near China’s Zhongshan station on Antarctica’s Prydz Bay, according to the China Daily. Members of China’s 33rd expedition surveyed a three-square-kilometer area and chose a place for the future airfield, the newspaper reported, citing Sun Bo, deputy Director of the State Oceanic Administration’s Polar Research Institute of China.

Sun spoke to a news conference in Shanghai on Tuesday after welcoming expedition members returning from their 161-day mission.

BIG Earthquake just off Chile's coast.

There were reports of buildings swaying in the tremor in the capital Santiago, about 115km east of the coast. -Yahoo

Chile has long been known to have many earthquakes. Seems that the number and intensity of earthquakes all around the 'Ring of Fire' are increasing lately. 

When I visited Vina del Mar in Chile quite a few years ago, there were many evidences of an on-going history of earthquakes.  Cracks in fireplaces, walls, skewed windows.  Chileans were almost used to it. However, with the increase in number and intensity, there's a new paradigm.  There is something causing these increases and changes all over the globe such as floods, volcanic activity, population unrest, frayed nerves, wars and rumors of wars, Greenland and Antarctica's ice sheets are cracking. What's going on?

A 7.1 quake is considered major and can cause heavy damage, however, the effects of this one were mitigated because it was offshore.
