Super-moon lunar eclipse will have stargazers seeing red
For the first time in more than 30 years, people across the Americas will get the chance this month to see a supermoon lunar eclipse.
The event starts with a supermoon, which is when a full moon coincides with the moon's perigree - the point in the lunar orbit when it's closest to Earth - making the moon appear larger and brighter than usual. Then the supermoon coincides with a lunar eclipse, when the moon passes directly into Earth's shadow.
It is a rare celestial sight for those of us on Earth. And to give us an even rarer view, this NASA animation shows what the event would look like from the moon:
Supermoon Lunar Eclipse 2015: Full 'Blood Moon' Coverage
by SPACE.com Staff | September 15, 2015 12:24pm ETA total lunar eclipse will spawn a rare and dramatic 'supermoon' blood moon on Sept. 27, 2015.
Supermoons occur when the moon reaches its full phase at or near the satellite's closest approach to Earth, and appears abnormally large and bright as a result. The Sept. 27 event is quite special; the last supermoon eclipse occurred in 1982, and the next won't take place until 2033.
Preview Story: Rare 'Supermoon' Total Lunar Eclipse Coming This Month
The supermoon eclipse, which will grace Earth's skies on Sept. 27, features a full moon that looks considerably larger and brighter than usual. It will be the first such lunar eclipse since 1982, and the last until 2033.

Rare 'Supermoon' Total Lunar Eclipse Coming This Month: The first "supermoon" lunar eclipse in more than three decades will grace Earth's skies this month, as will a partial solar eclipse that most of the world will miss.
Forget the 'Supermoon': What's Actually Happening at Lunar Perigee: You'll probably hear a lot about a "supermoon" over the next few months. This is not a term that astronomers use, but here are some facts about what will actually happen.
Supermoon vs. Minimoon: Sizing Up Earth's Satellite: The so-called "supermoon" has an impressive name, but just how super is the actual event? Taking the true measure of the supermoon means following Earth's satellite at different points on its trip around the planet.
Full Moon Tonight Offers Sneak Preview of September Lunar Eclipse: A full moon will grace the sky tonight (Aug. 29), but it is only a dress rehearsal for next month, when the full moon will undergo a total lunar eclipse.

This full moon is not only the closest and largest full moon of the year. It also presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2015. The moon will not be so close again until the full moon of November 14, 2016.
In other words, it’s not just a supermoon. It’s the closest supermoon of 2015.
Last but hardly least, this supermoon will present a total eclipse of the moon, visible on the night of September 27-28 from the Americas, the Atlantic, Greenland, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.http://earthsky.org/?p=190918
This total lunar eclipse will be visible from most of North America, South America, Europe, west Asia and parts of Africa will be able to see the eclipse.
In the Americas, the eclipse will begin on the evening of September 27, 2015.
The eclipse will last for 3 hrs and 20 mins from beginning to end. The Moon will be totally eclipsed (totality) for about 1 hr and 12 mins.
2014 – 2015 lunar tetrad
This eclipse is the fourth and last in a tetrad, a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses in 2014 – 2015.
The term Blood Moon has recently become popular when referring to the total lunar eclipses in the 2014 – 2015 lunar tetrad. While the term has no technical or astronomical basis, many people believe that it comes from the Bible, and that the occurrence of the lunar tetrad is a fulfillment of a biblical prophecy.

Syria's Assad blasts U.S.' "willful blindness" in fight against ISIS
BEIRUT -- Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview aired Wednesday that his priority is "defeating terrorism" in Syria and urged all political and armed factions in the country to unite in the fight against terrorist groups.
In an interview with Russian media, Assad also said there can be no political solution for his country's crisis until terrorism is defeated. He singled out the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which has captured about a third of Syrian territory along with large swaths of land in neighboring Iraq, as well as al Qaeda's branch in Syria, the Nusra Front, and "some others," without specifying.
The government in Damascus has long labelled all armed groups fighting Assad's forces as "terrorists." Assad made no reference to the extreme violence his forces have used on civilian areas during the country's civil war, now in its fifth year, repeating only that some mistakes have been made.
