Discovered on September 21st, 2012 by Artyom-Kislovodsk and Vitaly Nevsky using the International Scientific Optical Network’s (ISON) 0.4 metre reflector, this comet has just passed out from behind the Sun from our Earthly vantage point this summer to once again become visible in the dawn sky.

Of course, there’s much speculation as to whether this will be the “comet of the century” shining as “bright as the Full Moon” near perihelion. We caught up with veteran comet observer John Bortle earlier this year to see what skywatchers might expect from this comet in late 2013. We’ve also chronicled the online wackiness of comets past and present as ISON makes its way into the pantheon as the most recently fashionable scapegoat for “the end of the world of the week…”

But now its time to look at the astronomical prospects for observing Comet ISON, and what you can expect leading up to perihelion on November 28th.

Everything you need to know: Comet ISON in 2013

Comet ISON monthly viewing guide here.
Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) has been the most talked-about comet of 2013. When discovered in late 2012, it was said to have the potential to become a striking object visible to the eye alone around the time of its perihelion – or closest point to the sun – on November 28, 2013. People started saying Comet ISON and comet of the century in the same sentence. In June and July 2013, Comet ISON was behind the sun as seen from Earth, but when it was recovered in early August, it wasn’t as bright as hoped. What will happen with Comet ISON in the remaining months of 2013? Comets are notoriously unpredictable, but it’s safe to say that many are waiting to see if Comet ISON will sizzle … or fizzle.
Look below for a month-by-month Comet ISON viewing schedule and other information.

The NASA Comet ISON Observing Campaign is a NASA-backed program tasked with encouraging and facilitating a massive, global and celestial observing campaign for Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON).
Matthew Knight addresses why the uncertainty in ISON's current brightness, and Karl Battams explains why we have no new NASA images of Comet ISON.
This CIOC website is the hub for up-to-date information about Comet ISON, information on participation in the Campaign and how you can help, links to relevant observatories and programs, and blog postings from CIOC Team members. Over the coming weeks, as ISON makes its close approach to the Sun and an increasing volume of observations are made, you can expect to see a corresponding increase in the number of articles, blog posts and images appearing on the site.

Image of the Week

Every week, a new image related to Comet ISON!

This week: STEREO Coming Into Focus: We are now just a couple of short weeks away from NASA's STEREO spacecraft providing 24/7 observations of comet ISON!

Nostradamus Prophecies: Death Comet (ISON ?) – The War of the Third Antichrist – War World 3
More than five hundred years after his birth, the prophesies of Nostradamus continue to intrigue, fascinate, and confound.

Nostradamus wrote that a comet will come from Cancer and something like that is going to happen: ‘Brighter than a full moon’: The biggest star of 2013…  could be ISON C/2012 S1 – the comet of the century

A comet sighting in our times is key to identifying the third of three Antichrists foreseen by the prophet. In each case, Nostradamus provided clues that reverberated in similar phrases in a number of quatrains scattered throughout his book of prophecies for the fleet sooth-sleuth-sayer to decant for debate and discussion.

Nostradamus predicts the war of the Third Antichrist
Nostradamus predicts the war of the Third Antichrist will be the longest of the three. Napoleon’s war, as Nostradamus accurately predicted in 7 Q13, lasted 14 years (1799–1814), followed by another famous time prediction in 10 Q90 for Napoleon’s escape from exile on Elba in 1815 to lead France for a hundred days until his final defeat at Waterloo.

Nostradamus did not tag a specific length to Hitler’s war but he left powerful clues accurately framing the war in time. In his Epistle prophecies he earmarked the years “(19)37″, “(19)41″ and “(19)45″ as the beginning, middle and end of the conflict.
He was only slightly off on the beginning year–it was 1939–but 1941 did see the turning of the tide with the Second Antichrist’s disastrous invasion of Russia, started on the same day of the 129 year anniversary of the First Antichrist’s invasion, no less. Hitler’s war did end in 1945
Nostradamus gives two predictions for the length of the war of the Third Antichrist. In a passage written in 1558 about the three Antichrists in his Epistle to Henry II, he said the following:

“Finally the third [Antichrist] will cause an inundation of human blood, and one will not find Mars [the God of War] fasting for a long time… After that, the Antichrist will be the infernal prince again for the (third and) last time.
All the Kingdoms of Christianity, and even those of the infidels [Muslims], will tremble for the space of twenty-five years…”

Nostradamus’ quatrains are confusing and open to many interpretations but we do know that Comet ISON is coming (that’s if we survive the asteroid of February 15, 2013), and we do know that Pope Benedict is resigning. These facts beckon us to take a second look at some mystical and foreboding prophecies.

 This is Nostradamus’ Quatrain VI.6:

There will appear towards the North
Not far from Cancer the bearded star:
Susa, Siena, Boeotia, Eretria,
The great one of Rome will die, the night over.

Nostradamus prophesied that this (new) pope will flee Rome in the month of December, when the Great Comet is seen in the daytime. Nostradamus said that the Sun will appear to double. “The sky will display two suns.” Yes, Comet ISON is on the way!
Comet ISON will be visible in our skies for a full two months, November and December 2013. We will probably see Comet ISON and its 40,000-mile-long tail at night and in the daytime!
