JAPAN SPLITTING APART? Evacuations ordered

Forty-one earthquakes in 7 days show a clear pattern: the southern island of Kyushu, Japan seems to be splitting apart!

Data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) show a very clear line of quakes from the city of Kumamoto in the west, toward Yufu and Beppu in the Oita province northeast.

One can almost draw a straight line through the middle of the quakes, to get from Kumamoto to Yufu, in the Oita province to get an approximation of how the island may split apart. If this happens, Kumamoto, a city with a population of about 750,000, may be submerged in the sea.

Gaping cracks, 100's of feet wide and hundreds of yards long have appeared in the ground. The media has been calling them "landslides" but what they actually look like from the air is an enormous crack forming in the island; a crack showing the island is breaking apart.

To understand what's taking place, we begin with a map of Japan to identify the islands:

Shikoku

The smallest of the four main islands of Japan,

separated from Honshu by the Inland Sea:

forested and mountainous.

Pop.: 4 137 000 (2002 est.).

Area: 17 759 sq. km (6857 sq. miles)

It appears that Kyushu is breaking apart in a similar manner to the way Shikoku broke away from the main island of Honshu some time in the past.

Kyushu

Kumamoto Prefecture is in the center of Kyushu, the southernmost of the four major Japanese islands. It is bordered by the Ariake inland sea and the Amakusa archipelago to the west, Fukuoka Prefecture and Ōita Prefecture to the north, Miyazaki Prefecture to the east, and Kagoshima Prefecture to the south.

Mount Aso (1592 m), an extensive active volcano, is in the east of Kumamoto Prefecture. This volcano is located at the centre of the Aso caldera.

EVACUATIONS ORDERED

170,000 PEOPLE HAVE NOW BEEN ORDERED TO EVACUATE SECTIONS OF KUMAMOTO AND OITA PREFECTURES.

According to seismologists, the ground is "loose" from the earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture and Oita Prefecture , and as such there is a possibility that the landslides and flooding. But the flooding may not be from rivers, it may be the ocean pouring in! Evacuation instructions and recommendations to approximately 170,000 people in 12 municipalities have been issued.

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck on Ecuador's coast Saturday, leaving at least 41 people dead and causing buildings to shake in cities more than 100 miles away and collapsing an overpass, authorities and witnesses said.

The temblor struck just before 7 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET) with an epicenter 16 miles south-southeast of the coastal town of Muisne, located on the country's northwestern coast, the U.S. National Geological Survey said. The quake was recorded at a depth of about 12 miles.

The earthquake was initially called a magnitude-7.4 quake, but the USGS later upgraded it to a 7.8.

Three other earthquakes were recorded in the area in the two hours after the larger quake hit, ranging from 5.4 to 4.8 in magnitude, the USGS said.

A smaller 4.5 magnitude quake was recorded along the coast south of Muisne about a half-hour before the magnitude-7.8 quake struck, the agency said.

"Our infinite love to the families of the dead," Correa on Twitter, while cutting short a trip to Italy to return home.

The country's Geophysics Institute in a bulletin described "considerable damage" in the area of the epicenter and in Guayaquil. Glas said 10,000 military troops and 3,500 police have been dispatched to the affected areas.

"I was in my house watching a movie and everything started to shake. I ran out into the street and now I don't know what's going to happen," Lorena Cazares, 36, a telecommunications worker in Quito, told Reuters.

One person was killed when an overpass collapsed and crushed a car in the country's largest city, in the country's largest city, Guayaquil, located 200 miles to to the south of Muisne. Another occupant of the car survived and was taken to a hospital, authorities said.

Video posted online showed damage to a shopping mall in Portoviejo and people crowded in the street outside as alarms rang. A hotel in Manta partially collapsed and was left barely standing, and buildings were shaken to the ground in Guayaquil.

There is no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

NOAA's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves up to 3 feet above tide level were possible for some coastal areas of Ecuador, but later said the threat had largely passed. Ecuador's president said those on the coasts should seek higher ground as a precaution.

The quake was strongly felt in country's capital of Quito, around 100 miles away.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the latest quake struck just west-southwest of Kumamoto-shi and about 8 miles south-southeast of Ueki, the epicenter of the late Thursday tremor that left nine dead.

"No question, this is a large and very important earthquake," said Doug Given, a geophysicist with the USGS. "And it will do a lot of damage."

The quake prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami advisory for coastal regions of Japan on the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea around 2 a.m. Saturday (1 p.m. ET Friday). Tsunami advisories are issued when the tsunami height is expected to be between 0.2 and 1 meter (0.65 to 3.3 feet). A warning would be for larger tsunamis.

The agency subsequently lifted all tsunami warnings and advisories.

As Given noted, "the four islands of Japan are on the edge of what's traditionally been known as the 'Ring of Fire'" -- a stretch along parts of the Pacific Ocean prone to volcanoes and earthquakes.

Victor Sardina, a geophysicist in Honolulu, Hawaii, told CNN that the latest quake was about 30 times more powerful than Thursday's deadly tremor. He predicted "severe, serious implications in terms of damage and human losses."

The shallow depth of the quake -- about 10 kilometers, or 6 miles -- and the densely populated area where it struck could prove to be devastating, according to experts.

You may have slept through last night's 4.0 magnitude earthquake, but at least one U.S. Geological Service scientist wants to make sure you don't sleep again.

Tom Brocher, a scientist with the USGS, told CBS that the Hayward Fault, which produced last night's trembles, is due to produce a major earthquake "any day now."

Per CBS:

“The population is now 100 times bigger in the East Bay, so we have many more people that will be impacted,” said Tom Brocher, a research geophysicist with the USGS.

“We keep a close eye on the Hayward Fault because it does sit in the heart of the Bay Area and when we do get a big earthquake on it, it’s going to have a big impact on the entire Bay Area,” Brocher said.

While a 2008 report put the probability of a 6.7-magnitude or larger earthquake on the Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault system over the next 30 years at 31 percent, Brocher said the reality is a major quake is expected on the fault “any day now.”

“The past five major earthquakes on the fault have been about 140 years apart, and now we’re 147 years from that 1868 earthquake, so we definitely feel that could happen any time,” Brocher said.Bocher has been sounding the alarm on the Hayward Fault for a while now. In 2008, he was the lead author of a USGS report that described the fault as a "tectonic time bomb" and warned that a 6.8-7.0 magnitude quake could "could cause hundreds of deaths, leave thousands homeless, and devastate the region’s economy." Among the factors that lead the report's authors to suggest that the Hayward Fault is the country's most dangerous one are the facts that it is the "single most urbanized earthquake fault in the United States" and that "critical regional gas and water pipelines and electrical transmission lines cross."
