BOSTON (Reuters) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation warned U.S. businesses that hackers have used malicious software to launch a destructive cyberattack in the United States, following a devastating breach last week at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Cybersecurity experts said the malicious software described in the alert appeared to describe the one that affected Sony, which would mark first major destructive cyber attack waged against a company on U.S. soil. Such attacks have been launched in Asia and the Middle East, but none have been reported in the United States. The FBI report did not say how many companies had been victims of destructive attacks.

"I believe the coordinated cyberattack with destructive payloads against a corporation in the U.S. represents a watershed event," said Tom Kellermann, chief cybersecurity officer with security software maker Trend Micro Inc. "Geopolitics now serve as harbingers for destructive cyberattacks."

Widespread power outage has caused evacuations of buildings throughout the downtown

Power is slowly being restored Tuesday afternoon after a widespread outage caused evacuations of buildings throughout the downtown, including Joe Louis Arena, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, the Detroit Institute of Arts and some buildings at Wayne State University.

According to Detroit Press Office shortly before noon: "The city's public lighting grid suffered a major cable failure that has caused the entire grid to lose power at approximately 10:30 this morning. The outage is affecting all customers on the PLD grid. We have isolated the issue and are working to restore power as soon as possible."

"The city's Public Lighting Department is working closely with DTE during this process."

DTE Energy Co. spokesman Scott Simons said "it looks like the entire Detroit Public Lighting system is down. Affecting about 100 buildings, places like The Joe, Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, fire stations, schools. We were notified about 10:30 a.m. We're working with them to help resolve the situation. We'll help investigate the problem and make repairs. It's too early yet to determine what has caused the shutdown."

Ex-speaker latest official to raise alarm on threat of nuclear EMP attack by Tehran

WASHINGTON The threat posed to the national security of the United States by Iran was likened only to the one posed by Nazi Germany in the 1930s, by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who suggested Tehran could be planning for a pre-emptive nuclear electromagnetic pulse attack on America that would turn a third or more of the country "back to a 19th century level of development."

Gingrich made the stunning statements, which echo warning of other congressional leaders and national security experts, in testimony before a subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee last week.

He said the "extraordinary challenge that the current regime in Iran poses to the safety of the United States" requires "extraordinary measures to meet it."

"Not since the failure of the League of Nations in the 1930s to confront the aggression of the dictatorships in Japan, Italy and Germany have we seen the willful avoidance of reality which is now underway with regard to Iran," said Gingrich. "There are lessons to be learned from the 1930s and those lessons apply directly to the current government of Iran."

Gingrich pointed with alarm at a report first published in G2 Bulletin that Iran had tested the firing of ballistic missiles from a merchant ship in which warheads were detonated in midair over the Caspian Sea rather than at a land or sea target. National security experts and scientists commissioned by Congress to study the threat of electromagnetic pulse attacks on the U.S. concluded that Iran was preparing for just such a scenario. So does Gingrich.

So prepare, and bring “a large bottle of Advil,” Janet Napolitano told her yet-to-be-named replacement in a farewell address Tuesday morning.

“Many things still need tending, and my successor will most certainly have a full plate on his or her hands,” said Napolitano, who leaves her post next week after more than four years at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security.

Napolitano said she faced “many challenges” during her tenure at DHS, from the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009 to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

DHS — backed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal departments and agencies — led the federal government’s response to such disasters.

A Natural Disaster is on its Way

In the past few weeks, however, news is coming out that, rather than eliciting a "Hmmm," gets more of an "OMG!"

One disconcerting newsbreak was a heads up sent out by retired Senator Sheldon R. Songstad from South Dakota, revealing FEMA's seemingly frantic stockpiling of food and medical supplies before October 1, along with a nine-week training course for UN Peacekeepers in FEMA Region Three (DC, DE, MD, PA, VA, WV).

Granted, knowing that our country is squirreling away $14.2 million worth of food, loads of water and $11 million in antibiotics (although whether or not that is a good or bad thing is a whole topic in and of itself), kind of gives citizens of the United States a warm fuzzy, knowing that Uncle Sam is still out there taking care of us.

What made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, was the news that the training courses being held for "UN Peacekeepers" is in urban warfare, US weapons systems and ENGLISH.

The number of troops is reported as 386,000 and training must be completed by October 1. Anyone who's paying attention already knows that there are foreign troops on U.S. soil. Is "it" about to hit the fan?
