Two people were killed and more than 100 others were injured this afternoon as two powerful explosions detonated in quick succession near the Boston Marathon finish line in Boston’s Back Bay section, transforming a scene of athletic celebration into bloody chaos.
When the smoke cleared, dozens of victims lay in the street, some unconscious, some grievously injured, including some whose limbs had been torn off by the blast. The dead included an 8-year-old boy, according to two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation.

4:48 PM EST: Terrifying video of the second explosion:
4:42 PM EST: An AP reporter says families who suffered through the Newtown shooting in December were among those seated in the marathon's VIP section, which was adjacent to one of the blasts.
4:38 PM EST: Tom Putnam, director of the JFK Presidential Library, says today's fire in the library and museum was not caused by a bomb and was confined to a mechanical room.
4:21 PM EST: Boston's JFK Presidential Library caught fire in the immediate aftermath of the explosions. Though it's not certain the two events are related, Boston journalist Dave Wedge reports that police have been deployed to assist firefighters.
4:13 PM EST: Boston police just said that there are 23 injured and two dead, which conflicts with Fox's earlier report that three people had been killed.
4:04 PM EST: There are now multiple reports of "secondary devices," though how many there are is undetermined.
3:45 PM EST: New video shows the turbulent moments immediately following the first blast:
3:40 PM EST: The Boston Herald quotes an eyewitness who says one of the explosions "looked like it was in a trash can or something."
3:26 PM EST: Cambridge resident Bruce Mendelsohn tweeted this picture, saying, "I was in office right above it. There was a primary and a secondary explosion."
3:23 PM EST: An explosives unit has been dispatched to examine a "possible device" in front of the Mandarin Hotel.
ALL information I have gathered today including updated links.
3 have been at least 10 amputations. One of the victims killed was an 8 year old child. Many other children were hurt, people lost limbs. Two explosions at the end of the Boston Marathon. NBC says they were homemade bombs. 2 more bombs were just found near the scene at the time of this comment, and there are more devices around the city. They are using a triage center as a makeshift hospital. CNN, CBS, and Federal Officials are classifying the eplosions as a terrorist attack, though we are not sure whether or not it was Foreign or Domestic. There was a 3rd explosion in Copely Square by the JFK Library that occured at 3:00 p.m. Also, the families of the kids of the Connecticut shooting (Sandy Hook) were in the grand stands near the explosions, as the last leg of the race was dedicated to them. Cell phone carriers say phone service was NOT shut down in Boston, but that call volume overwhelmed the network. A suspicious device was found at Mass General in the parking garage. The situation remains fluid and remains too early to establish the cause and motivation.
