Well, it's amazing that this is now considered 'severe'... I remember when I first moved to South Florida in 1956 that we had many winters of freezing temperatures in January .. (but not so much in February) -- I still used my long overcoats that I had brought with me. Haven't had to use them in years now. I just wear jeans and leather jackets now. If I ever do need a lovely long overcoat, I'll use the beautiful cashmere one I inherited from Roy's mom. Sigh! If only we would have some really long spells of cold and if only I got invited to some fancy functions, then I could use that beautiful cashmere coat. Oh well.
Actually it SNOWED here in Miami in 1977! My daughter just now reminded me. It used to be quite commonplace to have crop endangering freezes back in those days. My daughter's husband took a picture of her standing beside his airplane with '1979' written in the frost on the windshield to remember the year.
Yes, wonder why it's much colder in mid February here than it was in January? We had warm weather this January.. in the 70 and 80 degree range.. Two days ago we were wearing shorts and tank tops outside. Today Roy went out to water the plants, and rushed back in, declaring it 'too cold'!! He brought the rare Everglades Ghost Orchids inside to keep them protected from the cold. These orchids are descended from one little plant that he brought back as a present to his mom, from one of his teen-age snake hunting forays into the Everglades back in the early '50's. Now it's grown so big that we divided it into 5 separate groups. We read that these orchids are an endangered species now, as the climate is changing in the Everglades.. as everywhere!
