Violent explosion shakes Mexico’s Popcatepetl volcano

 | The Extinction Protocol: 2012 and beyond

June 18, 2013 – MEXICO – Mexico’s active Popocatepetl volcano has registered a massive explosion spewing ash and incandescent rock almost 4 kilometers high. Authorities have warned that winds could blow the ash cloud as far away as Mexico City. Inhabitants of villages up to 25 kilometers from Popocatepetl (colloquially known as ‘Don Popo’) rushed out of their houses when the massive explosion reverberated through their homes. Esther Matinez, resident of Amecameca municipality, told Mexican publication La Jornada that the blast was like a rocket explosion. Around 4.5 million people live within a 50-kilometer radius of the active volcano, 650,000 of whom are considered to be at high risk.
According to authorities in the state of Puebla, where the second-tallest volcano in Mexico is located, the incandescent fragments released in the blast fell as far as 2 kilometers from the crater. Director of Puebla’s Civil Protection department Jesus Morales said that burning rocks sparked small fires around the volcano. “There were clouds at the time of the eruption so it was possible to observe the large shock wave accompanied by a plume of ash and incandescent material,” Morales said.
Mexico’s National Center for Prevention of Disasters (Cenapred) said the volcano had returned to its previous activity level, and that the volcanic alert level would remain at ‘yellow phase two.’ In addition, volcanic ash that was blown up to 4 kilometers into the air could be shifted by wind currents and then fall on Puebla, or even as far away as Mexico City, Cenapred warned. Popocatepetl had previously been in phase two after breaking the record for the most volcanic emissions in one day – the 5,452 –meter-tall giant gave off 300 emissions in just one day in May. In December 2000, the volcano registered one of its largest eruptions in recent history, prompting the mass evacuation of the surrounding countryside. The name Popocatepetl originates from the native Mexican Nahuatl language and means ‘smoking mountain.’ –RT

Canary Islands, El Hierro Waking up, Increasing

Seismic unrest at El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) in 2011-13: updates

Earthquakes increasing in frequency and magnitude

Depth vs time of today's quakes under El Hierro
The seismic swarm continues with even increasing intensity, as to both the average magnitude and frequency of earthquakes, as well as amplitude of harmonic volcanic tremor which is oscillating between higher and lower phases. This might correspond to some sort of "stop and go" behavior of magma moving its way through new cracks in the lower crust beneath the island. The location of the epicenters of quakes, the presumed location of the current magma intrusions, is now about 5 km NW of the western tip of the island, and at depths between 10-17 km. No strong upwards trend is yet visible, but this could change quickly.
Today's earthquake count so far:
- 155 earthquakes > mag 2
- including 15 between M3-3.5

Earthquakes continue with increasing magnitudes

The scenario of an eruption in the near future is becoming increasingly likely:
- Volcanic tremor continues, suggesting magma is still moving although mostly laterally for the time being to an area just north off the western tip of the island.
- Earthquakes continue at high frequency and increasing magnitudes (more than 90 quakes above magnitude 2, including 8 of magnitudes 3-3.5 so far today). Their epicenters have remained at 14-16 km depth mostly, with some shallower events as well.
- Deformation of the western part of the island continues to increase, with vertical uplift reaching about 5 cm on some stations in the westernmost part of the island.
The Spanish research vessel Roman Margaleff is on its way to investigate the area offshore western El Hierro, and INVOLCAN is planning a field survey in the coming days. Their results will likely give more clues about what is going on

.

Update Fri 22 Mar 17:16
Earthquakes and tremor have continued through the day, and continued to migrate a bit to the NW off the NW tip of the island. So far, 62 quakes above magnitude 2 have been recorded today.
In addition, the average depth of the latest earthquakes has become a bit shallower and is now around 13 km (compared to 17-20 km before). This suggests that magma is still moving and has risen a bit closer to the surface, and, thus, a possible eruption.

Large explosive eruption at Manam volcano

New post on The Extinction Protocol: 2012 and beyond

Sends ash plume to 45,000 ft altitude

by The Extinction Protocol
January 13, 2013 – PAPUA NEW GUINEA - A large eruption seems to have occurred this morning around 05:30 GMT from Manam volcano north of New Guinea. VAAC Darwin reported an ash plume rising to 45,000 ft (approx. 14 km) altitude.

A hot spot is visible on MODIS satellite data. For the moment, no precise other information about the nature of the eruption is available, as the island is remote and most of its population had been relocated after the last major activity in 2004. –Volcano Discovery

Mexico’s Colima volcano rocked by violent eruption

Survive Anything - Disasters - Economy Collapse - Mobs, Etc. PROTECT YOUR FAMILY!

New post on The Extinction Protocol: 2012 and beyond

19: Mexico’s Colima volcano rocked by violent eruption

by The Extinction Protocol
January 8, 2013 – MEXICO -

Yesterday afternoon, the day of Epiphany, a violent explosion of Volcán de Fuego de Colima Mexico has affected causing a high alert in the Mexican civil protection system with the immediate evacuation of about 3,000 tourists inside the National Park Nevado de Colima.

In locations around the volcano, there has been an intense rain of ashes, and from the summit of the mountain has run raised a cloud of lava and eruptive material over 2 km high.

At the time there were no damages nor was required the evacuation of the countries closest to the volcano, from which we have only been able to enjoy the unique spectacle of nature, but in the next few days is not impossible that the eruption could intensify , although at the moment it is quiet. As a precaution, the National Park is closed to visitors indefinitely.
