Hurricane Irene strengthens to Category 2

Update: Now a Category 2 Hurricane

Hurricane Irene has intensified to a category 2 system, as it continues on a path toward the Bahamas. At 8 p.m. Monday the storm was in the Atlantic about 200 miles southeast of Grand Turk Island, moving northwest at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour.

Picking up steam, Irene, the first hurricane of 2011, looks headed for major storm status and for Florida and the Carolinas.

Hurricane Irene, now packing 80-mph winds that made it a Category 1 hurricane, passed Monday north of the island of Hispaniola, home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and will head for the Bahamas by Wednesday.

The move prompted a warning from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, that the storm will likely intensify to a Category 3 storm with winds of at least 111 mph by Thursday.

"Residents of Florida and the southeastern U.S. should be keeping their eyes on this storm and have their hurricane supplies ready now," says hurricane center spokesman Dennis Feltgen. "No one wants to be standing in line at the hardware store when a storm hits."

Strange Orange Mess falls on Alaska Village

August 6, 2011 – ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Leona Baldwin’s husband saw it first, and she got on the marine radio to alert others in the remote Alaska village of Kivalina that a strange orange goo was sitting on top of the town's harbor.






The news attracted all the townspeople, anxious to get a gander of the phenomenon that covered much of the harbor and then began washing ashore Wednesday. The next day it rained, and residents found the orange matter floating on top of the rain buckets they use to collect drinking water. It was also found on one roof, leading them to believe whatever it was, it was airborne, too. By Friday, the orange substance in the lagoon had dissipated or washed out to sea, and what was left on ground had dried to a powdery substance. Samples of the orange matter were collected in canning jars and sent to a lab in Anchorage for analysis. Until results are known, Kivalina's 374 residents will likely continue to wonder just what exactly happened in their village. "Certainly at this point it's a mystery," said Emanuel Hignutt, a chemist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation lab in Anchorage . Kivalina, an Inupiat Eskimo village, is located at the tip of an 8-mile barrier reef on Alaska's northwest coast, and is located between the Chukchi Sea and Kivalina River to the north and the Wulik River to the south. Villagers have never seen anything like this before, and elders have never heard any stories passed down from earlier generations about an orange-colored substance coming into town. Portions of the samples will also be sent to the University of Alaska Fairbanks and to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in South Carolina for testing. "

• Thanks for the vid, just took a look at it on intellicast, you can actually see it being laid down by at least two planes at the moment(heading west to east). I still had a small doubt about chemtrails, not anymore.

• DUTCH!!! Im in the SF Bay Area, so this intrigues me a bit. All of the weather stations in my extended area say its gonna be 78 degrees and sunny for the next 10 days. I am going to watch those VERY closely for the next 48 hours to see how drastic of a change they will post. I actually wouldnt mind a bit of rain and wind, so maybe its a good thing...maybe just tryin to keep the ground moist so we don't have as many wildfires is one possibility, although, I dont really like breathing Barium.
