BREAKING: Doctor Dies of Ebola at Nebraska Hospital

(Reuters) – A surgeon who contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone has died of the disease at a Nebraska hospital, medical officials said on Monday, the second death from the virus out of 10 known cases treated in the United States.
Dr. Martin Salia, a native of Sierra Leone and a permanent U.S. resident, was suffering from advanced symptoms, including kidney and respiratory failure, when he arrived at the Nebraska Medical Center on Saturday, the hospital said in a statement.
Hospital officials had said he was seriously ill when he was airlifted to the United States from West Africa.
“Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to save him,” Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the Biocontainment Unit at Nebraska Medical Center, said in a statement on Monday.
Salia, 44, was chief medical officer at United Methodist Kissy Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone, when he tested positive last week for Ebola, according to the United Methodist Church’s news service.
The news service said it was unclear how or where Salia contracted the virus. He worked at several other medical facilities in addition to Kissy Hospital.
The church’s news service said Salia has never practiced medicine in the United States. He trained as a doctor in Sierra Leone’s College of Medicine and Allied Sciences, his wife said.
His evacuation was at the request of his wife, an American who lives in Maryland and who has agreed to reimburse the U.S. government for any expense, the State Department said.
Salia was the third Ebola patient treated at the Nebraska Medical Center. His treatment included a dose of convalescent plasma and ZMapp therapy, as well as being placed on dialysis, a ventilator and multiple medications to support his organs, the hospital said.
The two other Ebola patients treated by the hospital were infected in Liberia and recovered from the disease.

New Virus Threat: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

Now in Europe

Mon., June 3, 2013 11:42am (EDT)

Now a virus that has caused respiratory failure and 30 deaths has turned up in Italy.

By Scott Hensley

The World Health Organization
says lab tests have confirmed the infections in a 2-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, or MERS-CoV, as it's now called.

Both of the patients, who are in stable condition, are close contacts of someone who traveled to Jordan recently, the WHO says.

Illnesses caused by the virus have originated in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, WHO says. In France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and the United Kingdom, there have been additional cases seen in people who had traveled in the Middle East or who'd been in close contact with someone who had.

All told, there have been 53 cases where lab tests have showed conclusively that the virus was to blame, WHO says.

recent French report on two cases (one involving a man who had traveled to Dubai and the other in a man who shared his hospital room) indicates that the incubation period for the virus may be as long as nine to 12 days, rather than one to nine days. That suggests that any quarantine of infected people may have to be prolonged to limit the spread of the virus.

The MERS virus - the newly coined acronym is short for Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome - first came to the world's attention last September, though retrospective testing dates the earliest known cases to a hospital outbreak in Jordan in April 2012.

The novel coronavirus: 9 things you should know about MERS

The World Health Organization is calling it “a threat to the entire world.” And with good reason: the new SARS-like virus, named MERS-CoV, has now seeped into a handful of European nations, with 51 lab-confirmed cases, and 30 deaths.

Its deadliness lies in its mystery

On May 27, the Who director-general Margaret Chain called MERS a “threat to the whole world” because of too many unknown variables. She called it her “greatest concern” in the world’s health situation.

“We understand too little about this virus when viewed against the magnitude of its potential threat. Any new disease that is emerging faster than our understanding is never under control,” she said.

TORONTO – The World Health Organization is calling it “a threat to the entire world.”
And with good reason: the new SARS-like virus, named MERS-CoV, has now seeped into a handful of European nations, with 51 lab-confirmed cases, and 30 deaths.
It’s been over a year since the first few cases of the disease were identified in Amman, Jordan. In the past few weeks, it’s gained in speed: over the weekend, three more people died from the new respiratory virus.

The coronavirus can transmit from person to person

While it’s unclear how the virus is spreading from person to person, experts say the clusters of family members spreading the virus confirm that human-to-human transmission exists.

Global News takes a look at the novel coronavirus that has scientists anxiously watching its next move.

The first cases appeared in Jordan and Saudi Arabia

In April 2012, the first cluster of two cases – both fatal – tested positive for the coronavirus in Amman, Jordan. By October 2012, a second cluster that included four family members was identified. In that case, two people died, according to the
Centers for Disease Control.

By October 2010, another family of four was diagnosed with coronavirus. Two people died.

So far, most cases appear to be men between 24 and 94 years old.

Deadly New Virus - 50% Human Death Rate

(Reuters) - The emergence of a deadly virus previously unseen in humans that has already killed half those known to be infected requires speedy scientific detective work to figure out its potential.
The World Health Organization says at least a dozen people have become sick with a new virus it calls NCOV or Novel Coronavirus.
This potentially fatal SARS-like virus was first identified in September of last year.
Symptoms of infection with the virus include an acute respiratory infection, fever and a cough.
So far, it has only showed up abroad, but experts say they wouldn't be surprised if it appeared in the U-S.

....
Experts in virology and infectious diseases say that while they already have unprecedented detail about the genetics and capabilities of the novel coronavirus, or NCoV, what worries them more is what they don't know.
The virus, which belongs to the same family as viruses that cause the common cold and the one that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), emerged in the Middle East last year and has so far killed seven of the 13 people it is known to have infected worldwide.
Of those, six have been in Saudi Arabia, two in Jordan, and others in Britain and Germany linked to travel in the Middle East or to family clusters.
"What we know really concerns me, but what we don't know really scares me," said Michael Osterholm, director of the U.S.-based Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy and a professor at the University of Minnesota.
....
"ONE BIG VIROLOGICAL BLENDER"
Initial scientific analysis by laboratory scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) - which helped identify the virus in a Qatari patient in September last year - found that NCoV's closest relatives are most probably bat viruses.
It is not unusual for viruses to jump from animals to humans and mutate in the process - high profile examples include the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS and the H1N1 swine flu which caused a pandemic in 2009 and 2010.
...Yet there are many unanswered questions.
SPOTLIGHT ON SAUDI ARABIA, JORDAN
"At the moment we just don't know whether the virus might actually be quite widespread and it's just a tiny proportion of people who get really sick, or whether it's a brand new virus carrying a much greater virulence potential," said Wendy Barclay, a flu virologist, also at Imperial College London.
To have any success in answering those questions, scientists and health officials in affected countries such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan need to conduct swift and robust epidemiological studies to find out whether the virus is circulating more widely in people but causing milder symptoms.
This would help establish whether the 13 cases seen so far are the most severe and represent "the tip the iceberg", said Volker Thiel of the Institute of Immunobiology at Kantonal Hospital in Switzerland, who published research this month showing NCoV grows efficiently in human cells.

In a detailed case study of a patient from Qatar who was infected with NCoV and treated in Germany, researchers said the man reported owning a camel and a goat farm on which several goats had been ill with fevers before he himself got sick.

...

Yet recent evidence from a cluster of cases in a family in Britain strongly suggests NCoV can be passed from one person to another and may not always come from an animal source.
An infection in a British man who had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, reported on February 11, was swiftly followed by two more British cases in the same family in people who had no recent travel history in the Middle East.
...

"There's nothing in the virology that tells us this thing is going to stop being transmitted," said Osterholm. "Today the world is one big virological blender. And if it's sustaining itself (in humans) in the Middle East then it will show up around the rest of the world. It's just a matter of time."

Out of the mouth of babes....

Not to worry, he says, but he also poses a thought that this is BIO-ENGINEERED.

My thought is, if this is indeed bio-engineered from a source in the Middle East, would they not have a vaccine or an antidote?  Or would this just be along the lines of their glorious martydom?

We are living in interesting times!
