LABELLE, FL -

A 12-year-old LaBelle boy is fighting for his life against a rare and often fatal infection that is attacking and eating away at his brain.

If he survives, he'll become only the fourth person to ever overcome the brain-eating amoeba he contracted while knee boarding with friends.

It has been a painful journey for Zachary Reyna and his family. The 7th grader was doing what most 12-year-old boys do—just playing outside with friends near his home.

The fun day outside quickly turned into a game of waiting, fighting and praying.

Zachary's brother Brandon Villarreal shared his story with us hoping to bring awareness.

Villarreal said Zachary's invisible opponent unexpectedly attacked last Saturday afternoon while the young boy was knee boarding in a ditch by his house.

"We said, ‘Oh, he just has a virus, he just has one of those 24 hour viruses," Villarreal said. "He slept all day all night and that's when my mom said, ‘OK something's not right.'"
