Earthquake shakes Cayman

Government sources have confirmed that an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred near Grand Cayman at around 8:30 on Tuesday morning 11 July.
The quake was reportedly located only 30 miles east of George Town at 19.3 degrees north and 80.9 degrees west, at a depth of 6.2 miles.
At a press conference held by the National Hurricane Committee Leader of Government Business, the Hon. Kurt Tibbetts mentioned the earthquake and briefly discussed the seismic program the government is developing.
"Staff at Lands & Survey with assistance from MRCU are presently ramping up our seismic monitoring programme - in fact, my Ministry just authorized minor capital works to install four remote seismic sensors throughout all three Islands," he said.
"I understand the US Geological Survey is anxious to have a Caribbean partner in seismic monitoring."
As part of the training component of the programme Mr Tibbetts also mentioned that Senior Geometrician Mike Whiteman, from the Lands & Survey Department, was in Brazil this week attending a seismic conference with other regional and international specialists.
