A U.S. cage fighter ripped out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive after becoming convinced he was possessed by the devil, it was alleged today.
Jarrod Wyatt also cut out Taylor Powell's tongue and ripped off most of his face in a brutal assault that police said looked like a scene from a horror film, officers said.
They claim they found the 26-year-old standing naked over his friend's body with parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room in Klamath, California.
Wyatt allegedly told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced Powell was possessed.
According to an autopsy Powell, 21, bled to death after his heart was ripped out.
The coroner said Powell had been alive when the organ was ripped out after his chest had been sliced open with a knife.
Wyatt told the police he thrown the heart into a fire along with other organs that he had removed from the body, it was claimed.
He allegedly told investigators he cooked the body parts because he was fearful Powell was still alive and he ‘needed to stop the Devil’.
Police had been called to the grisly scene after a third friend had witnessed a sudden mood change in Wyatt after they had all ingested wild mushroom tea.
Justin Davis told police he returned to the flat to find Wyatt naked and covered from head to toe in blood.
He noticed an eyeball lying in the middle of the floor and saw Powell's mutilated body.
A lawyer representing Wyatt has claimed the wild mushrooms caused him to act in such a violent way and had no control over his actions.
‘My client was trying to silence the devil,’ said James Fallman.
‘I think he was having a psychotic fit based on the mushrooms he had.’
Wyatt has been charged with first degree murder and torture.
Prosecutors added the torture charge as Powell was still alive when his heart was removed.

Ronald Poppo, the pitiful victim of the horrific attack which left most of his face gone and seriously bleeding, is in critical condition here in Miami, at the Trauma Center of Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Prayers are needed not only for his survival, but for defense against the evil winds blowing around the world in these times, shall I say, in these End Times?

Poppo remains in critical condition at the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office is expected to perform an autopsy that will include a toxicology screening to determine whether Eugene really was under the influence of drugs when he went on the attack.
According to public records, Eugene was married from 2005 through 2007 — his divorce from Jenny Ductant was finalized Jan. 7, 2008. Ductant declined an interview request Tuesday afternoon. The divorce case file mentions nothing about children.
During the marriage, Eugene lived in Hollywood.
But as a teenager, he attended John F. Kennedy Middle School andNorth Miami Beach High School, Forte said. He was not one to get into serious trouble, she said.
Even after graduating, Eugene's brushes with the law were relatively minor. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement shows Eugene was arrested as a teenager in 1997 by the Miami-Dade Police Department for battery, but the charges were later dropped.
Over the next few years, Eugene picked up seven more arrests, but none for violence. They include four marijuana arrests and one for selling drugs near a school.
His last arrest came in 2009, a marijuana charge that was dropped, state records show.
Jim Hall, director of Nova Southeastern University's Center for the Study and Prevention of Substance Abuse, said the level of violence associated with the incident led him to believe synthetic drugs commonly known as "bath salts" may be involved, but he could not be certain. Cocaine and methamphetamines could also bring out such violent behavior, he said.
Hall described bath salts as being among the "front burner" of drugs catching the attention of law enforcement officials and users. They are part of a group of hundreds of psychoactive substances that are not regulated and sold as legal products.
The drugs mostly comprise chemicals called mephedrone and MDPV. They are usually swallowed or snorted.
He said there have been many reports of the drugs causing violent behavior, but nothing as violent as cannibalism.
"A key issue is that nobody ever knows what's in them. They can be something mild one week, something very strong the next week," he said.
Efforts to contact the victim's family on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
Poppo has a lengthy, non-violent criminal record dating back to the mid-1980s, mostly for crimes associated with living on the streets. That includes a 1983 bust for sleeping in public and numerous arrests for public and disorderly intoxication.
His last arrest on record came in 2006 for trespassing.
The quality of the victim's recovery will depend largely on how bad the damage was, said Michael Salzhauer, a Miami plastic surgeon who has performed facial reconstruction surgery for gunshot victims.
"The real question is how much skin is left," said Salzhauer, chief surgeon at Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery Associates. "Once you clean out the blood and see how much skin is left, we may have a candidate for a face transplant."
Full face transplant surgeries are rare and cutting edge, Salzhauer said.
The first such surgery in the United States was performed on a Texas man just last year. Another recipient was the Connecticut woman who was mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009. Her face transplant surgery was in May 2011.
Even without a transplant, Poppo could still benefit from reconstruction using skin tissue from other parts of his body, including the buttocks and forearms, Salzhauer said.

Police sources have identified the homeless victim in a horrific, bloody assault in which a naked North Miami Beach man chewed off a large portion of another's man's face, as first reported by the Miami Herald andCBS Miami.
Ronald Poppo, 65, is in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, just blocks from where he was attacked by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene in broad daylight Saturday on the Downtown off-ramp of Miami's busy MacArthur Causeway.
According to CBS, Poppo's arrest records -- mostly for the sort of petty crime common among the homeless -- show he has lived in New York City and New Orleans but suggest he has spent at least a good deal of his time in Miami since 1978. He is not found in Miami-Dade court records after a 2006 trespassing charge.
Strangely, Saturday's savage attack is apparently not the first time Poppo has been seriously injured Downtown. The Miami New Times reports that he was shot in Miami's Bayfront Park by an unidentified person in 1976, spending five days at Jackson. His given address at the time was a local Salvation Army.
Gruesome photos circulating the web suggest that if Poppo survives Saturday's assault, he may do so without much of his face. Hospital employees have so far not been able to contact any of Poppo's family, according to CBS.
"It was not only grotesque, it was just very sad, the amount of blood," Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, told the Associated Press. "It was very sad to see what happened to this gentleman that had his face eaten."
Miami Police have so far disclosed few details about the incident, in which Eugene was shot dead by a police officer. But an eyewitness who was riding his bike nearby told WSVN he flagged down a police officer after coming across Eugene, stark naked, chewing off Poppo's face.

Naked man who tried to rip the flesh off another man on MacArthur Causeway in Miami identified

The naked man who viciously attacked another man — at one point trying to eat off the other man’s face — before he was shot dead by police was identified Monday.
Police sources said Monday the attacker was 31-year-old Rudy Eugene. His name was first reported by WPLG ABC 10.
The name of the man Eugene seriously hurt remained a mystery. On Monday, the man was still at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in critical condition.
“We’re hoping that he pulls through, for his well-being, but also so he can tell us what happened,” said Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami police union. “Only he knows.”
The grisly scene unfolded Saturday about 2 p.m. on the MacArthur Causeway, near the off-ramp to Biscayne Boulevard. A Road Ranger spotted the men and shouted on his loudspeaker for the attacker to back away. Meanwhile, a woman also saw what was happening flagged down an officer.
One witness, Larry Vega, told WSVN-Fox 7 he was riding his bicycle on the MacArthur when he saw a man tearing off pieces of the victim’s flesh with his mouth.
Vega said he found a police officer, who approached and told the attacker to get off the man. But the attacker kept chewing, Vega said, even after the officer shot once at him.
The officer fired again, hitting him several more times, eventually killing him.
The name of the officer who fired the fatal shots also was not released.
Security video from the adjacent Miami Herald building captured snippets of the violence as the two men — one dead, the other gravely injured — lay on the sidewalk as scores of officers arrived.
On Monday, police said they still needed witnesses to come forward about what they saw.
“We know that there were many people on the MacArthur Causeway,” police spokesman Detective William Moreno said, “and we’re hoping they come forward.”
