Dee Date: Monday, May 24, 2010, 8:04 PM White House Covers Up Menacing Oil "Blob" Written by Wayne Madsen    In an exclusive for Oilprice.com,  the Wayne Madsen Report (WMR) has learned from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sources that U.S. Navy submarines deployed to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast have detected what amounts to a frozen oil blob from the oil geyser at the destroyed Deep Horizon off-shore oil rig south of Louisiana. The Navy submarines have trained video cameras on the moving blob, which remains frozen at depths of between 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Because the oil blob is heavier than water, it remains frozen at current depths. FEMA and Corps of Engineers employees are upset that the White House and the Pentagon remain tight-lipped and in cover-up mode about the images of the massive and fast-moving frozen coagulated oil blob that is being imaged by Navy submarines that are tracking its movement. The sources point out that BP and the White House conspired to withhold videos from BP-contracted submersibles that showed the oil geyser that was spewing oil from the chasm underneath the datum of the Deep Horizon at rates far exceeding originally reported amounts. We have learned that it was largely WMR's scoop on the existence of the BP videos that forced the company and its White House patrons to finally agree to the release of the video footage. The White House is officially stating that it does not know where the officially reported 10 miles long by 3 miles wide "plume" is actually located or in what direction it is heading. However, WMR's sources claim the White House is getting real-time reports from Navy submarines as to the blob's location. We have learned that the blob is transiting the Florida Straits between Florida and Cuba, propelled by the Gulf's Loop Current, and that parts of it that is encountering warmer waters are breaking off into smaller tar balls that are now washing ashore in the environmentally-sensitive Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas. Corps of Engineers and FEMA officials are also livid about the cover-up of the extent of the oil damage being promulgated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its marine research vessel in the Gulf, RV Pelican. NOAA stands accused by the aforementioned agencies of acting as a virtual public relations arm for BP. NOAA is a component of the business-oriented Department of Commerce. Similarly, the Coast Guard, which takes its orders from the cover-up operatives at the Homeland Security Department, is denying the tar balls washing up on the Florida Keys are from the oil mass. WMR has been told the Coast Guard is lying in order to protect the Obama administration, which has thoroughly failed in its response to the disaster. The White House's only concern is trying to limit political damage to its image in the electorally-important state of Florida while the Pentagon has spent between $25 and $30 billion on oil spill operations in the Gulf and the Atlantic to date.   WMR sources also report that the oil mass has resulted in dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico that have cut off oxygen and killed massive numbers of marine creatures and plant life. Seafood wholesalers from the Gulf Coast to New Jersey and New York have been told that the supply of shrimp, oysters, and other seafood from the Gulf is severely in short supply and that they can expect a possible total cut-off as the situation worsens. The shortage will also affect the supply of seafood, especially shrimp, to national seafood restaurant chains like Red Lobster and Long John Silver's. There is also evidence that BP, Halliburton, and Transocean sank a drill to a depth of 35,000 feet at the Deep Horizon site some six months ago without the required permits from the federal government. WMR has learned from U.S. government sources that the drilling at 35,000 feet caused a major catastrophic event that required the firms' oil rig personnel to quickly pull up the drill and close the drill hole. However, the Deep Horizon re-sank the drill some six months after the unspecified "catastrophe," resulting in another, more destructive chain of events following the explosion that destroyed the rig, killing eleven workers. When the Deep Horizon blew up, WMR has been told it also "blew down," cracking the the sub-seabed pipe that may have been re-drilled to a depth of between 25,000 to 30,000 feet, again, without a government permit. Government sources also report that BP is intent on recovering as much oil as possible from the undersea geyser rather than simply plugging and capping the well, which would then place it off-limits to further drilling. The Corps of Engineers reports that BP is playing a game with Obama, convincing him of the feasibility of "shooting junk" into the subterranean pipe, which would stop up the pipe with a manufactured chemical compound called "MUD." However, WMR has been informed that BP actually intends to shoot cement into the pipe in an attempt to cap the well with the later intention of digging a trench for side drilling from the pipe to recover as much oil as possible. The technology that would be employed by BP is the same technology that was used by Kuwait to conduct slant drilling of Iraq's Rumallah oil field -- an event that helped trigger Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Corps of Engineers and FEMA sources also give a failing grade to both Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who stands accused of being woefully incompetent in handling the disaster, and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. Government sources say both secretaries should immediately step down or be fired. Even if 10 miles by 3 miles by 300 feet thick is overstated by a factor of 5, the flow rate would have to be exponentially larger than the official 211k gallons a day. Adjust for gallons per sq cubic foot - I think its around 7.2 or 7.4, then adjust for 28 odd days of flow. Even if you adjust down figuring the measurements are all taken at the widest points, its still a crazy number. Adjust down further figuring the numbers are very overstated estimates. Or better yet, take the various flow rates offered and see how big of a plume they could make it 28 days and then compare to reported size. They don't equate so one or the other is clearly wrong. Too bad, we can't have the shores protected by hay and otherwise useless clippings blown along the shorelines by boats, airboats, volunteers, fishermen, barges,etc. and British Petroleum, why not?  Because it's too simple, and inexpensive, and transparent.  Instead, we must involve more big industry, big government, bureaucrats, committees, more cooks in the kitchen, with complicated Rube Goldberg siphoning equipment bound to break down frequently, costing millions.  If big government gets involved, you can bet not all of the taxes  forevermore to be  collected will be used for the purpose intended.     Committees cost money - and waste more money.   Well, at least BP is siphoning off some of the oil, how much?   they're not telling us accurately how much is being siphoned off.  It varies. All they could do was hobble.Several pelicans were coated in oil on Barataria Bay off Louisiana, their usually brown and white feathers now jet black. Pelican eggs were glazed with rust-colored gunk, and new hatchlings and nests were also coated with crude. It is unclear if the area can even be cleaned. It is also unknown how much of the Gulf Coast will end up looking the same way because of a well that has spewed untold millions of gallons of oil since an offshore rig exploded more than a month ago. A mile-long tube operating for about a week has siphoned off more than half a million gallons in the past week, but it began sucking up oil at a slower rate over the weekend. Even at its best the effort did not capture all the oil leaking, and the next attempt to stanch the flow won't be put into action until at least Tuesday. With oil pushing at least 12 miles into Louisiana's marshes and two major pelican rookeries now coated in crude, state officials said they are taking part of the response to the Gulf of Mexico spill into their own hands. Gov. Bobby Jindal, standing on a boat at the edge of one of the nesting grounds, said Louisiana is no longer waiting for the federal government to sign off on a plan for a makeshift chain of sand berms that would skirt the state's coastline. Jindal and officials from several coastal parishes say the berms would close the door on oil still pouring from a mile-deep gusher about 50 miles out in the Gulf. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is studying the environmental impact of the proposal and has yet to give its approval. "We are not waiting for them. We are going to build it," Jindal said. Jindal said the state has already identified and started initial work on 40 sites for the berms, but will keep pushing for federal approval, which would free up Corps-controlled dredges for the operation. A single state-owned dredge was activated for the effort Friday. At least 6 million gallons of crude have spewed into the Gulf, though some scientists have said they believe the spill already surpasses the 11 million-gallon 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska as the worst in U.S. history. In Barataria Bay, orange oil had made its way a good six inches onto the shore, coating grasses and the nests of brown pelicans in mangrove trees. Just six months ago, the birds had been removed from the federal endangered species list. The pelicans struggled to clean the crude from their bodies, splashing in the water and preening themselves. One stood at the edge of the island with its wings lifted slightly, its head drooping — so encrusted in oil it couldn't fly. Wildlife officials tried to rescue oil-soaked pelicans Sunday, but they suspended their efforts after spooking the birds. They said they weren't sure whether they would try again, and that sometimes it is better to leave the animals alone than disturb their colony. Pelicans are especially vulnerable to oil. Not only could they eat tainted fish and feed it to their young, but they could die of hypothermia or drowning if they're soaked in oil. Globs of oil have soaked through containment booms set up in the area. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said BP PLC, which leased the rig and is responsible for the cleanup, needed to send more booms. He said it would be up to federal wildlife authorities to decide whether to try to clean the oil that has already washed ashore. "The question is, will it do more damage because this island is covered with the mess?" Nungesser said. Officials have considered some drastic solutions for cleaning the oil — like burning or flooding the marshes — but they may have to sit back and let nature take care of it. Plants and pelican eggs could wind up trampled to death by well-meaning humans. If the marshes are too dry, setting them ablaze could burn plants to the roots and obliterate the wetlands. Flooding might help by floating out the oil, but it also could wash away the natural barriers to flooding from hurricanes and other disasters — much like hurricanes Katrina and Rita washed away marshlands in 2005. State and federal officials spent millions rebuilding the much-needed buffer against tropical storms. The spill's impact now stretches across 150 miles, from Dauphin Island, Ala. to Grand Isle, La. On Sunday, oil reached an 1,150-acre oyster ground leased by Belle Chasse, La., fisherman Dave Cvitanovich. He said cleanup crews were stringing lines of absorbent boom along the surrounding marshes, but that still left large clumps of rust-colored oil floating over his oyster beds. Mature oysters might eventually filter out the crude and become fit for sale, but this year's crop of spate, or young oysters, will perish. "Those will die in the oil," Cvitanovich said. "It's inevitable." Each day the spill grows, so does anger with the government and BP. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa P. Jackson was headed Sunday to Louisiana, where she planned to visit with frustrated residents. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano were to lead a Senate delegation to the region on Monday to fly over affected areas and keep an eye on the response. The leak may not be completely stopped until a relief well is dug, a project that could take months. Another effort that BP said will begin Tuesday at the earliest will shoot heavy mud, and then cement, into the blown well, but that method has never been attempted before in mile-deep water and engineers are not sure it will work. The only thing that has kept leaking oil out of the Gulf so far is the mile-long tube siphoning oil from the well to a ship. BP spokesman John Curry told The Associated Press on Sunday that it siphoned some 57,120 gallons of oil within the past 24 hours, a sharp drop from the 92,400 gallons of oil a day that the device was sucking up on Friday. The amount BP has collected in the mile-long tube has varied since it was installed last week. The device was siphoning 42,000 gallons of oil a day early that week, but at times Thursday, the siphon was collecting oil at a rate of as much as 210,000 gallons a day. BP refused to provide day-by-day figures on how much oil the tube was diverting. Curry said the rate is expected to vary widely, in part because it is not just oil but also natural gas that is leaking. On Sunday, for instance, the siphon collected more than 7 million cubic feet of gas. The head of the Senate's environmental committee, Democrat Barbara Boxer of California, has asked the Justice Department to determine whether BP made false and misleading claims about its ability to prevent a serious oil spill. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs also told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday that Justice Department officials have been to the region gathering information about the spill. However, he wouldn't say whether the department has opened a criminal investigation. President Barack Obama has named a special independent commission to review what happened. The spill began after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana on April 20, killing 11 workers; the rig sank two days later. The 6 million-gallon figure for the spill is based on an initial BP estimate that about 210,000 gallons were spilling out each day. It became obvious the company had been underestimating the leak Thursday, when it started siphoning the oil at a 210,000-gallon-a-day rate while more crude spilled into the water. ___ Greg Bluestein reported from Covington, La. Usually too little help comes too late at a huge ongoing and never-ending "emergency" expense, paid for by a special extra tax which never gets rescinded.. It's easy to spend thepublic's money, because no one individual in the government has to take responsibility for the mis-management of the people's money. If there is an outcry over the resultant expense and/or mis-management, then more committees at more expense get formed, and nothing gets resolved well, usually swept under the rug. Thank you for this.  The Bible is timeless and always pertinent, exhorts us to be "good stewards'.  Those that heed the meanings deep in there which are obvious to those who have faith, insight and gifts of the spirit will be surviving just fine.  Whereas those that are stubbornly blind will not get the point, they will continue to place their worship on their own selfish desires, their desire to have more, consume more, worship cinema stars, sitcoms, latest fashions, be adulated themselves, needing to have the 'biggest' and more than their neighbors, they will continue to mess up our lovely home, our earth and their own lives.  Per "Gr8152" in "comments" section: By far the largest source of world oil consumption is to make gasoline for cars. There are now over 500,000,000 cars in the world. Cars are easily the world's largest source of land, air and water pollution, not only from the gasoline to drive them, which is made from oil, but also from the mining of the earth to make metals to build them, which heavily pollutes river waters worldwide. The trucks, jets and ships used to transport automobiles around the world burns astronomical amounts of gasoline/oil. The U.S. rate of oil consumption is roughly 20 million barrels PER DAY, and world oil consumption is roughly 85 million barrels per day, or 1 BILLION barrels EVERY 10 DAYS. 15-20 percent of U.S oil is consumed by the U.S. agricultural/industrial complex. Most American's, on average, get their food trucked in from 1300 miles away instead of buying it from local organic sources or growing our own. This burns massive amounts of gasoline/oil. We have lived without cars for roughly 250,000 years since modern hominids (humans) first appeared on earth. We need to end our dependence on cars soon. The pollution to the land, air and sea...better known as our food and water supply...cannot stand much more of this poisoning. Here's a quote from the King James version of the Christian bible, the book of Revelation, Chapter 9 verse 17-21, it seems to be concerning the appearance of automobiles shortly before Christ returns, the horseman are the drivers of automobiles, the fire in their mouths are the car engines combusting, their serpent tails are the tailpipes of the cars spewing brimstone which is exhaust fumes: "And the number of the army of the horseman were 200,000,000: and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of Jacinth, and BRIMSTONE: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three were the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.  For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails; for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.  And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk. We should all make an attempt to drive less or not drive at all if possible, also buying local/organic food which is not transported from thousands of miles away which burns massive amounts of gas/oil. Buy from your local farmer's market or grow your own. Avoid using plastic, if possible, plastic is made from oil. There is now a plastic debris field in the middle of the Pacific Ocean THE SIZE OF TEXAS. Write to your state senators and representatives and ask that they mandate the manufacture and sales of bio-plastics made from organic corn or other organic vegetable matter to stop global plastic pollution. Corn/vegetable based bioplastics degrade and break down quickly when thrown out.
