Homeowners' Disasters in Bayou Corne, Louisiana Sinkhole

Last Aug 3, 2012, a giant sinkhole opened up when a Texas Brine salt mine collapsed in Bayou Corne, LA. 

Locals knew something was not right months before when they began to find natural gas bubbling up in the swamp. Texas Brine had alerted state agencies there might be a problem after they drilled too close to the mine edge years before, but no one let the residents know. 

A mandatory evacuation order was issued, but many residents have not moved. 

The hole continues to grow. Geophysicists are conducting high tech tests to come up with a model of what the mine looks like now so they might be able to predict what will happen next. How toxic and dangerous is Bayou Corne now? It depends whom you listen to. Experts will be battling that out in court. Texas Brine has not offered to buy the endangered properties. Homeowners get a weekly $850 compensation check, which Texas Brine is required to pay by law since all signs point to them being responsible. 

People’s lives are in limbo. 

This once peaceful paradise is now a place of nightmares where flare vents burning 24 hours a day and the stench of crude oil fills the air whenever the sinkhole burps.

Louisiana's state of emergency due to its giant Bayou Corne "sinkhole" is nearing seven months long, but the tremors, migrating methane, and expansion continue in this week's new round of environmental and human assaults that now officially extend two miles and prompted workers to be pulled off the job.

Wednesday, the state's Department of Natural Resources Office of Conservation began advising Assumption Parish officials and the public in the Bayou Corne area that the contracted CB&I and Itasca Group analysis of ongoing seismic monitoring detected what again appeared to be an uptick in underground fluid movement below the sinkhole.

Underground "fluid" appears to be moving in the vicinity of Texas Brine LLC’s failed Oxy 3 cavern over the past three days.

The advisement was publicly issued and then relayed at 1:15 P.M. Wednesday by Assumption Parish officials.

"As noted in earlier similar events, the fluid movement appears to be linked to observations of trees falling into the sinkhole, release of trapped debris from the sinkhole bottom and increased odor from hydrocarbons released to surface," the state advised, according to the Assumption Parish post on its blog.

Tuesday, quakes, or "underground tremors" as officials call the mini-quakes at the disaster site, resulted in workers called off of the collapsing salt dome "sinkhole" job site.

Along with the "tremors" Tuesday, small bubbling spots re-emerged in the salt dome "sinkhole" that prompted a State of Emergency declaration almost seven months ago.

Methane, now expanding two miles in the emergency area, typically moves ahead of crude oil.

There are are over 40 reported methane bubbling sites in the area, in local bayous and swamps, where the dangerous gas percolates and threatens to ignite and explode.CB&I and Itasca Group analysts also advised Wednesday that, while the activity appears to represent no additional significant threat to the general area, operations directly on the sinkhole be suspended until subsurface activity slows again.

The historic sinkhole is engulfing the entire 1-mile by 3-mile Napoleonville Salt Dome, as reported by this author on Sept. 30.

At that time, early in the disaster, Bayou Corne residen Randy Rousseau said, "I don't feel comfortable here. I don't feel safe. I don't think this will get any better. The sooner I can get out of here, the better."

Locals continue to request national media attention and for Governor Jindal to respond more aggressively to the emergency.

Last week, officials admitted facts about the explosive methane lurking in the area:

1) There is substantially more than 50,000,000 cubic feet of methane below surface near giant sinkhole.

2) The methane covers over 2 square miles.

3) There is enough methane there to do “very serious damage” and very rapidly, “if uncontrolled.”

First, I apologize for the camera shake.I was in a boat, very nervous, and trying to hurry....

The water level was low as is normal for this time of year, and muddy from a recent heavy rain.

This was my first sight of these methane gas under pressure bubbling sites down the bayou approx 1/2 mile from the homes on the south side of Hwy 70. Nothing I have seen on the news, or on the APPJ flicker photo site prepared me for what I saw going on. I was shocked, and so very heavy hearted after seeing what I saw. It was very chilling, knowing of all the gas under us, but also knowing of the massive (unknown location) voids in the earth.

There was a direct path of water coming from the sinkhole and draining in to the bayou at the pipeline row, and several others, none contained. Texas Brine and the other agencies seem to think that little boom they have at the sinkhole is enough. I disagree. The booms do not stop the saltwater. We saw only one small alligator in about 30 minutes, and lots of dead fish.

If there are this many bubbling sites in the water where they are easily seen, we can only dare to imagine how many are on land, and in the swamps between the sinkhole and the homes west of the sinkhole....that we don't know of.

  Matt Simmons was murdered for warning Gulf residents that this was going to occur as a direct result of BP's actions. Millions may die in as short as twenty minutes because these chemicals and gasses will displace oxygen, and folks will just start dropping dead. NO ONE SHOULD BE THERE WITHOUT A GAS MASK AND RESPIRATOR ON!!!

I live next door on the Mississippi gulf coast and have a son in law that works in Gonzales LA. It blows me away how unaware folks are of this sinkhole even in my area.   You know Rain? This is scarey. It really is. As of the date of up-load, what are the "authorities" doing about this seemingly very dangerous place you call home. What are the chances of a major catastrophy happening and approx. date. and are you and yours prepared. I would be very concerned. (not to add to your worry, sorry).

  anyway, great footage, and ty again for getting the footage that the state or perish will not get for the people. Just be carefull out there ... the air cannot possibly be good for you rhealth with methane (and who knows what other gas) comming up all around you.

  How does your data hold up against the other sink holes such as the latest one in Ohio? And to the rest of y'all these effects would happen when the sun is pulling on this side of the earth kinda like the moon pulls the ocean. Not to mention rising surface temp. So it's not business hours. The gov works 24/7 anyway.

  Is anyone else suspicious as to why there is more seismic activity during daylight hours than during the night? I wonder if there is some human activity going on during the day (regular working hours) that may be adding to the seismic activity. Something like drilling test wells, etc.

  What you can deduce from this video, and the readings therein, is that these tremors are happening during BUSINESS HOURS. There is no way this pattern of movement could be natural.

  You will discover, if you look back through the records, that this has been the pattern for quite a while.

  So who is doing this during BUSINESS HOURS? Did they think we would not notice such an obvious pattern?
