Oldest Mayan Astronomical Tables Discovered

Under the Guatemalan jungle, 1,200-year-old paintings like no others. "Unprecedented"

Jungle ordeal leads to surprise treasure

A report in Science says it dates from the early 9th Century, pre-dating other Mayan calendars by centuries.

    Wall of the Xultun find
The first known murals of Mayan art were discovered after removing the dirt from a surprisingly  well preserved building.

The excavation was carried out using grants from the National Geographic Society, which has prepared a high-resolution photographic tour of the room.

Archaeologists stumbled onto the astronomical tables, inscribed on the walls of a small building, while excavating part of the Xultun ruins, a large, heavily looted archaeological site in northern Guatemala, near its borders with Mexico and Belize. William Saturno, an archaeologist at Boston University (B.U.), recalls that an undergraduate student noticed the remains of a mural on one of the walls, triggering an excavation of the room, which had been partly exposed by looters. On three of the walls the researchers found figural paintings, along with a series of glyphs and numerals.

The tables suggest that the Mesoamerican civilisation had advanced astronomy for over 1000 years, and that the information was widely available in Mayan society.

    Dig for astronomy

In 2010 Saturno and colleagues were excavating Mayan ruins at Xultún, also in Guatemala. One house had been partially looted, exposing a mural on one wall. Intrigued, Saturno excavated the rest of the building.

Archaeologists William Saturno (right), David Stuart, and Hector Escobedo inspect the walls of an 80-foot-high pyramid exposed by looters at a Maya ceremonial site in Guatemala. Saturno discovered the oldest known wall painting of Maya mythology inside the pyramid when he wandered into a crude looters' trench in search of shade.

The walls were covered with pictures of Mayan people. In the gaps between the drawings, and sometimes drawn over the top of them, were glyphs: Mayan writing. Two sets looked like Dresden Codex glyphs, and contained astronomical information.
The first is a table describing lunar cycles: the 29.5 days it takes for the moon to go through all of its phases. The Maya believed in six gods of the moon, each ruling its own lunar cycle. By knowing which god was in charge of the moon at any given time, Mayan rulers could plan their actions accordingly. "The Maya doubtless started with a presumption of meaning in such movements," explains Houston.
No Classic astronomical texts survive, because Mayan books were made of plaster and bark paper that have rotted away, says William Saturno of Boston University in Massachusetts.
Until now our main evidence of Mayan astronomical knowledge came from books produced centuries after their society declined. The most famous is the Dresden Codex, which dates from the 11th or 12th century. "The Dresden Codex was the summit – artistically, calligraphically, and intellectually," says Stephen Houston of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
But the Maya civilisation reached its height centuries before that. The Classic period spanned AD 250-900 and saw the rise of major cities – including Tikalin what is now Guatemala – and the construction of vast stepped pyramids.
    1000-year-long calculation

The second set of glyphs is more obscure. It possibly relates to two Mayan calendars: a ritual calendar lasting 260 days and the solar calendar, lasting 365 days. The two calendars only show the same date once every 18,980 days – the so-called Calendar Round.
All the numbers in the second set are multiples of 18,980, suggesting they are anniversaries. They are also multiples of other astronomical cycles. But Saturno doesn't know what they represent.
"It seems obvious that the Maya were making almanacs, major calculations, and Dresden Codex-like astronomical tables for over 1000 years," says Joyce Marcus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Such calendars rose to prominence recently amid claims they predicted the end of the world in 2012. However, these astrological calculations show cycles rather than endings.  Seems that the Mayans were looking for continuances of life.

Mayan society was dominated by the idea that time is cyclic. "The Maya conceived of time as a series of cycles that all interplay and all repeat," Saturno says. By understanding these repetitions, including astronomical cycles, they picked the most auspicious dates for events, such as coronations.
The house probably belonged to a senior figure but not a royal. That suggests astronomical information was broadly available in Mayan society, says Gary Feinman of the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois.

Mayan Empire Collapse-Warning for Us

Climate change may have caused Mayan civilization's collapse

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle.

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Relatively mild drought may have caused the collapse of the classic Maya civilization in what is now southern Mexico and Guatemala, researchers say.

It had long been believed that prolonged severe drought caused the collapse of the civilization in around 950 A.D, but Mexican and British researchers now think seasonal water supplies in the region could have been exhausted by a small but sustained drop in rainfall.

Researchers from Britain's University of Southampton collaborated in the research with the Yucatan Center for Scientific Research in southern Mexico.

"This is in a region that has no surface water," researcher Nicholas Dunning said. "There are only a handful of caves that go deep enough to get to the permanent water table, so for anyplace that's bone dry for five months out of the year, this is a pretty special location."
Excavations of the city revealed the cave was part of a network of cisterns and reservoirs that fed the community's water supply.

Two large reservoirs were located in the middle of the city and the smaller reservoirs and cisterns extended into the residential area and surrounding farmland, the researcher said.

The city was the largest in the Puuc Region of the Yucatan from around 800 B.C. to 100 A.D., but there are significant signs the city was abandoned between 100 A.D. and 300 A.D., most likely due to drought, a university release said.

The ancient Mayan empire once stretched across an area about the size of Texas, with cities and fields occupying what is now southern Mexico and northernCentral America, including the countries of Guatemala,Belize, El Salvador and Honduras. The height of the Mayan empire, known as the Classic period, reached from approximately A.D. 250 to at least A.D. 900.

The ancient Maya had what was arguably the most advanced civilization in the Americas. For instance, they made dramatic breakthroughs in astronomy that helped them very accurately predict where the moon and other planets would be in the sky centuries in the future. They also left behind many books and stone inscriptions regarding the stories of their gods and the history of their divine kings and queens.
Maya is a mysterious civilization, about which nobody knows where it appeared no, nor as missing. Maya civilization lived in the area between Mexico and SouthAmerica, and was very advanced, especially in mathematics, astronomy and architecture. Maya accurately predict eclipses and movements of Venus meant the tables with a precision that stupefies scientists today, and used the numeral 20 as a basis,and not the 10 that we use today. Besides astronomy, another area where the Mayan civilization excelled is architecture,  considered the largest and most prolific builders  on our planet. Maya erected thousands of buildings that attract and amaze today by the harmony of forms,  ambition and scale of projects and through an undeniable beauty.
Maya has always been an enigma. A few decades ago, the glory of their cities ruined, and their beautiful writing, but manyresearchers had made unreadable to imagine a peaceful society of scribes and priests. Maya history became a fresco withaccurate data and powerful characters outlined.

The collapse of the ancient Mayan civilization may have been linked to relatively modest dry spells, researchers now say.

The scientists found that rainfall in the region decreased episodically for periods as long as a decade at a time.
"Our results show rather modest rainfall reductions between times when the Classic Maya civilization flourished and its collapse between 800 to 950," said researcher Eelco Rohling, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Southampton in England. "These reductions amount to only 25 to 40 percent in annual rainfall, but they were large enough for evaporation to become dominant over rainfall, and open water availability was rapidly reduced. The data suggest that the main cause was a decrease in summer storm activity."
Warning for the present
The scientists noted that the droughts they saw during the demise of the ancient Mayan civilization were similar in severity to those projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the near future in the same region. [10 Surprising Results of Global Warming]
"There are differences too, but the warning is clear -- what seems like a minor reduction in water availability may lead to important, long-lasting problems," Medina-Elizalde said. "This problem is not unique to the Yucatan Peninsula, but applies to all regions in similar settings where evaporation is high. Today, we have the benefit of awareness, and we should act accordingly."
