Work Underway to Repair Quake-Damaged Washington Monument

September 28, 2011
Work is under way on the Washington Monument  - one of the U.S. capital's best-known tourist attractions - to repair damage from the earthquake that struck the East Coast of the United States in August.

It is a startling sight atop one of the most recognizable structures in Washington: a rope rigger, climbing out on the tip of the 169-meter-high Washington Monument.

The rigger is making preparations for a team of engineers to rappel down the sides of the monument - to inspect damage from the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Washington in August.

Jeff Comer stopped to watch on his way to work.

"I knew they were looking at the earthquake damage, but then I saw this guy up on the monument and I have never seen anybody up there before," he said.  "It’s really cool!"

Hurricanes, Quakes, Smart Insurance Moves

What a week: An earthquake gave the East Coast a jolt and now a hurricane is bearing down.

Protect yourself first, by evacuating when it's advised or ordered. But take care of your property, too. Here are some tips from safety pros.
From Reuters Money

No one’s immune. Virgin Atlantic mogul Richard Branson’s compound on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands was destroyed by fire this week after being struck by a Hurricane Irene-connected lightning bolt.
And, according to The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, lightning can strike twice. So there’s no such thing as being too prepared.
Given that the weather is in motion, it’s time to deal with most folks’ biggest investment — their homes. So, whether you’re going to hunker down or be evacuated, batten down the hatches.
The questions you should be asking, according to Scott Spencer, senior vice president and worldwide appraisal and loss prevention manager for Chubb Personal Insurance, are: “Where are you going to go? What are going to take with you? And how you are going to secure your property?
If you have the time, check your policy to see what coverage you have for evacuation. Spencer said some policies (Chubb’s do) cover hotel costs when you have to flee for your own safety.
He suggests leaving behind fragile items — things more likely to damaged in transit — and move them to an interior location with some degree of protection from potential wind and water entering the home. “You shouldn’t take with you your fine arts. I wouldn’t recommend you take your priciest art work with you as you go down I-95.”
Some other important steps he suggests:
  • Bring outdoor items, such as porch furniture indoors so they don’t turn into projectiles. “If you can’t move patio furniture indoors, put it in a swimming pool. It’s a better place than leaving it on the patio.”
  • Unplug your major appliances and electronics to avoid power surge damage when electricity goes out and then comes back on.
  • Seal all windows and doors (leaving a window open a crack as an aid is an old-wives tale) and place towels and blankets against doors and vulnerable windows to help mitigate any water that might enter.
  • If you have a car in your garage, back it up until it is touching the garage door to help prevent the door from being blown in.
  • Take with you cash, your medications and your insurance policy, so it’s handy if you have to make a claim.
Flood insurance is separate and often overlooked, leaving many homeowners at risk of only having part of their loss covered.
“Those are things that are often times overlooked until the last minute,” Tomlinson says. “You can’t get insurance at the 12th hour. It’s mandatory they understand this up front.”
Spencer, from Chubb, noted that it’s worth shopping around for insurance and determining exactly what you covered for and what you’re not.
“Some  people think all insurance policies are the same,” he says. “They’re as different as cars.”

Joel Rosenberg - Comments on U.S. Rare Quakes

RARE EARTHQUAKES SHAKE AMERICAN EAST COAST, ROCKY MTN STATES

5.9 earthquake shakes East Coast (AP graphic)
Two rare earthquakes have hit the U.S. in two days -- a 5.9 magnitude tremor epicentered in southern Virginia on Tuesday shook the White House, Capitol and Pentagon and was felt up and down the Eastern seaboard; and the largest earthquake in Colorado and New Mexico four decades occurred on Monday.

Until now, I'd never experienced an earthquake before. While this one was mild, it made me think of the column I wrote last month, entitled"The Lord is shaking the nations physically, spiritually, financially: Why, and how should we respond?"  A few excerpts might be worth reconsidering today:
  • "Americans, too, are being shaken. We face arguably the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Nearly half of all Americans believe we are heading towards another Great Depression. Unemployment is over 9%. Housing foreclosures are skyhigh. People have lost enormous sums of money due to depressed housing prices and stock market volatility. The federal government is trying to spend our way to prosperity but is making things worse. Our annual federal budget deficit topped $1.3 trillion last year. This year, it looks like the feds will spend more than $1.5 trillion beyond what they are taking in in revenue. Our debt is skyrocketing. The U.S. is now on the verge of financial default, and hampered further by political ineptitude in Washington that threatens to comp0und an already precarious situation.

  • "What if these events are not all random? What if the God of the Bible is allowing these to happen to shake us, to wake us, to get our attention, that we might turn to Him and ask Him to have mercy on us and help us?

  • "The Lord said through the ancient Hebrew Prophet Haggai that the nations would be shaken in the future. “For thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. I will shake all the nations….I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations.” (Haggai 2:6, 7, 21, 22)"
