What a night! The house sounded like an old sailboat in a storm being battered by icebergs in rough seas.. Went to sleep at almost 5:00 am, awoke at 7:00 am to horrible noises... electric went out... has not come back on...We've been told it will be 4 weeks before all power is back. Now running on a generator and a dial up on a laptop.. my regular computer's dsl is down.. We are so blessed to have a gas stove and gas water heater.. plenty of flashlights..Am able to cook hot food! We got a good generator on sale a couple of weeks before the hurricane. What a blessing to be able to keep the refrigerator running. Our gazebo in our back yard is wrecked, but hot tub and sauna are o.k. -- lost one small tree in the front.. son Bruce next door lost a palm tree - he may be able to save it. Wooden fence between our yard and neighbor's is down.. Roy won't be able to shower out there in the daytime! ha ha! Our cars got covered with salty water and leaves so Roy washed them this afternoon. My sons in Broward County north of Miami-Dade are both o.k. My son Bruce next door and daughter Lorrie from Homestead came over after cleaning up mess all day and I cooked some dinner for them... they were really tired.
Lorrie lost all trees but two in her back yard - her roof is o.k. but 50 percent in her neighborhood, near Homestead Air Force base are damaged..She had to get help to move a fallen tree that was blocking her truck. Bruce lost a palm tree and another one is leaning dangerously. His back patio screen is just about totaled. He lost a lot of roof shingles too, but it didn't leak... we went around the neighborhood and picked up all the shingles we could find - he's going to 'paste' them back on his roof - being as he doesn't have any insurance! They were too tired to go down to Conch Key to see the damage to Lorrie and Manny's 'shack' and their boat. A neighbor there called her and reported that their boat survived - thank God! But the dock is gone! Manny is out in Hawaii and won't be back till Friday, and he's been frantic worrying about Lorrie and the boat. That dock was beautiful and Manny had put a lot of love and work into it...
Despite sandbags, my sister Ann in Key West has an inch of 'sewer' water flooding her house I hear. I can't get through to her on her phones as they have no electric and her cell phone battery is now drained. I'm sure she's bummed out over water in her house. We are so blessed that it seems to have been a pretty dry storm in our area - we had heavy winds, but the rain was all around us - somehow it missed Cutler Ridge!
The cats didn't like all the noise at all! One is still in hiding somewhere in the junk room, the big girl follows us all around, and the tiny one is snuggling in my lap now.
If you are in the hurricane swath and you are able to get this email, please let me know how you're doing.
