Mysterious blasts, flashes in the sky have Tyngsboro residents rattled

TYNGSBORO Looking south from his home on Curtis Road Tuesday night, Chris Lyons saw the bright flash light up the clouds. About three seconds later came the boom a deep thump that shook his entire house.

From Hudson, N.H., to the Chelmsford line, the eastern half of Tyngsboro has been rocked with well over a dozen of these mysterious, pulsating booms over the past five weeks, rattling both windows and nerves. Lyons said he knows a thing or two about explosives. As a youngster, the engineer used to mess around with M-80s or fashion homemade explosives under proper adult supervision, of course out of black gunpowder and aluminum piping.

"Those are like sparklers compared to what is going on here," Lyons said. "If this were in a house, there would not be a board left. The house would be pulverized.

"Ten sticks of dynamite might not completely blow up a house," Lyons added. "But what happened that night ... I can't even describe it. For a guy who's not afraid of this stuff, my God, I felt very intimidated.

"All I could think of, to tell you the truth, was my son going to school the next day, and it was unsettling," Lyons said.

All reported incidents have occurred after dark, mostly between 7 and 9 p.m. Nearly all of them have been reported on Mondays and Tuesdays.

When the bangs were first heard in late October, police called the Federal Aviation Administration, thinking they might have been sonic booms from aircraft. They were not.

Residents didn't report the incidents at first, thinking they were related to demolition or construction projects that might be happening in the area. Blasting permits are only allowed during daytime hours, and none were issued during this time period.

Callers initially reported seeing bright flashes of light in the hills west of the Firehouse Restaurant & Lounge which is about a half-mile south of the Tyngsboro Bridge and to the east, near the banks of the Merrimack River. Most of the flashes were white, but other eyewitnesses have reported seeing orange and red flashes. One resident said she saw blue lightning-like streaks.

"I didn't think anything of it," said Jackie Baker, who lives down the road from the Firehouse Restaurant. "But then, when it shook the house... ."

On Nov. 1, police received dozens of calls reporting at least six incidents between about 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. The Lowell and Chelmsford police departments also investigated similar complaints stemming from the same incidents.

Tyngsboro patrol cars were even in the area during all of the bangs, but officers could not pinpoint their location. Riding on all-terrain vehicles the next day, other officers searched the expansive woods west of the Boston University Corporate Education Center campus, where some thought the blasts might have originated.

More booms were heard Nov. 2, Nov. 9, Nov. 23 and Nov. 30.

"It was very loud," said Henry Moulton, who lives on Lawrence Road, just south of the school complex on Norris Road. "Something like a bomb exploding in World War II."

"I thought it was in my back yard," said Moulton's wife, Yvette. "I thought maybe the swimming pool had blown up."

It took nearly 10 minutes for Henry Moulton to get through to the police dispatcher, whose telephone line was flooded with dozens of similar calls.

What is especially baffling is that, to date, no one has reported finding any evidence of explosions, such as burn marks, splintered wood or rock or other debris.

"There's got to be something, somewhere," said Ellen Lyons.

It would seem unlikely that the blasts are being caused by dynamite or more modern explosives. In the wake of 9-11, even blasting caps must be painstakingly accounted for, making it nearly impossible to misplace such materials without drawing attention from federal investigators. Some residents suspect the blasts could be homemade concoctions of fertilizer, chemicals or explosive gases.

"We definitely want to get to the bottom of this ... absolutely," said Selectman Kevin O'Connor.

Deputy Police Chief Richard Burrows said the police don't know what's causing the low-pitched booms and are looking for the public's help.

Meteorite lights up WA skies

A spectacular meteorite fireball has lit up the sky over a wide area of Western Australia.

The spectacle is reported to have been in the north of the state, also as far east as Kalgoorlie, nearly 500km from Perth, and in the south at Albany, which is just over 400km from the capital.

Astronomers believe the meteorite, flashing brightly and sending out sonic booms, smashed into the earth's atmosphere about 300km southeast of Perth at 8.47pm yesterday.

It is thought to be the biggest celestial light show seen in WA in a decade.

New Comet Discovery Confirmed By US Astronomer, Russian Scientists Predict ?Earth Directed? Course as World Weather Chaos Continues

One of the most critical concerns among the World?s Scientists relating to both the unprecedented Solar activity from our Sun, and the likewise unprecedented disruptions to the Earth?s weather systems, and which many Scientists subscribing to the Electrical Theories of our Universe have stated could only be caused by an ?unknown massive object? having entered our Solar System, has been answered by a United States Astronomer confirmation of an as yet unnamed New Comet, and as we can read as reported by the Hawaii?s Star Bulletin News Service in their article titled "UH astronomer finds new comet" and which says:

"University of Hawaii astronomer Fabrizio Bernardi came here from Italy to look for potentially dangerous asteroids. "But, of course, we see other objects -- stars and comets. This time, the first time, I saw a new comet," the postdoctoral researcher said. Bernardi was looking at images taken with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea when he noticed an object that was "a bit fuzzy," with a tail estimated at more than 13,000 miles long.

"When I saw the comet images, it was a big surprise. The first thing I was doing was to check to see if it was new." There were no known comets in the part of the sky where the comet was spotted, about 280 million miles away from Earth, almost three times the distance from Earth to the sun."

Russian scientific reports regarding this New Comet state that unlike all other know Comets this new ?object? appears to have broken the 1950 Jan Oort theory and had its origin in interstellar space.

These reports further state that this New Comet is the direct cause of the Earth?s Atmospheres continued assault this year by a never-ending stream of strikes, and to which another one has been reported to strike our Southern Hemispheric Regions, and as we can read as reported by the Weekend Australia News Service in their December 4^th article titled "Meteorite lights up WA skies" and which says:

"A spectacular meteorite fireball has lit up the sky over a wide area of Western Australia. On January 5^th where in the Wisconsin Region of the United States a news report says, ?Authorities in north central Wisconsin received dozens of reports Tuesday evening of bright flashes of light in the sky, as from an explosion, and they said it likely came from meteor activity."

On January 7^th where in the Alaskan Region of the

United States

a news report says, ?Juneau residents saw a fiery ball traversing the sky.?

On January 12^th where in

India

it is reported, ?I saw a huge ball of fire in the air. It raced down to the earth so fast that before I could do anything."

But, if they had presented these events for consideration they would have also had to have shown that these sightings contradict The American Meteor Society, and as they have stated, ?Due to the combination of all of these factors, only a handful of witnessed meteorite falls occur each year."

As we had also previously reported in our October 4^th report titled "Massive Fireballs Continuing Hitting North America Atmosphere as Russian Scientists Warn Of Potential for 2004 MN4 Asteroid to Wipe Out All Life on Earth" we had stated:

?As reported by the Orlando Sentinel News Service in their September 21^st article titled "Light in the sky may have been meteor" and which says, "A mysterious ball of fire that soared through the sky around sunset two nights ago may have been a meteor. Several people sighted the occurrence around 7:32 p.m. Tuesday, officials said. An off-duty policeman from Palm Bay walking his dog called the U.S. Coast Guard first. "He said it looked like a huge flaming ball that went off into the horizon," said Daniel Yates, a Coast Guard petty officer in Port Canaveral."

As reported by the Miami Herald News Service in their September 29^th article titled "Fireball meteor lights up sky along Florida coast" and which says, "Drivers from Miami Beach to Melbourne slowed to look up. People walking outside stopped in their tracks. And astronomers who missed it lamented the lost opportunity. Around 7 p.m. tonight, what experts say was likely a meteor coasted through the dimming sky for a few seconds, producing what observers described as a large white flame with an elongated tail."

As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette News Service in their October 4^th article titled "Green fireball across sky likely a meteor, experts say" and which says, "A bright green object that blazed from north to south over the region in the predawn hours yesterday likely was a meteor and not the re-entry of space debris, an Air Force Space Command official said. The sighting of the object caused numerous phone calls to local radio and television stations when it appeared around 5:40 a.m. KDKA Radio reported the object was seen from Indiana to Virginia, but would have been visible for less than 10 seconds before it burned up in the atmosphere."

And to which we can add today?s report, and as we can read as reported by the Richmond Times Dispatch in their November 1^st article titled "Flash seen in sky possibly a meteor?" and which says, "Dana Coleman was anxious to know what was behind the "extraordinary bright light" seen last night in Richmond and as far away as Goochland and Dinwiddie counties. "It was really, really strange," Coleman said, minutes after the sighting. Coleman lives near Libbie and Grove avenues. She and three friends were chatting outside about 9:25 p.m. when "the whole backyard suddenly illuminated." She said the bright blue light moved south with an orange and white streak. It then exploded and disappeared, she said. "We weren't afraid," Coleman said. "We were more in awe."

Since that November 2^nd report our world has been further assaulted, and as we can see evidenced from these reports:

As reported by the Reuters News Service in their November 4^th article titled "Fireballs seen over Germany spark UFO speculation" and which says, "Numerous sightings of massive fireballs in the skies over Germany this week have led to an upsurge in reports of UFOs, but scientists believe the cause could be a bizarre annual meteor blitz. NASA's science Web site mentions reports of recent fireball sightings in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, North Ireland and Japan."

As reported by the Associated Press News Service in their November 6th article titled "Big meteor shower puts on show in Alaska" and which says, "Thursday. Paul Vos was watching a movie with his wife and son at their home in Hope at about 8:30 p.m. the same night when all three saw an arc of light over the mountains in the southern sky. "It had a real long tail, kind of a silvery white, and from a real perspective it was about the size of a large softball or basketball or soccer ball," Vos said. A spectacular sky show is playing over Alaska this month as Earth passes through the fiery remnants of a comet."

As reported by the WOOD TV News Service in their November 8^th article titled "Taurid meteor showers seen in skies above West Michigan" and which says, "Bright fireballs have been reportedly flying over West Michigan the last few nights. 24 Hour News 8 has received a handful of e-mails and calls asking what those bright lights may be."

As reported by the Australian News Service in their November 8^th article titled "Planet takes a meteor shower" and which says, "Gold Coast resident Rohan Zerna was looking southeast about 8.40pm on Sunday when what he described as the most amazing sight appeared in the sky. "What appeared to be a shooting star descended at a 45-degree angle, leaving a trail that flashed orange," he said. Mr. Zerna said the fireball was visible for four to five seconds and changed from blue-white to orange with a long, thick tail similar in size to large vapor trails sometimesseen behind high-flying jet aircraft."

As reported by the Oregonian News Service in their November 9^th article titled "Skywatchers treated with fiery meteors" and which says, "Fireballs -- large meteors that are a rare treat in fall's typically cloudy weather -- have been spotted streaking across the Oregon sky in the past two weeks. Dick Pugh, a meteor expert with with the Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory at Portland State University, said he received reports from surprised eyewitnesses of fireballs Oct. 30 and Monday evening."

These Russian Scientific reports further state the origins of these Meteorites were by the passing through our Solar Systems Kuiper Belt, and both ?pushing? and ?pulling? multiple ?objects? out of their previous orbits towards ones directing towards the Sun, and with many of them crossing the Orbit of our Earth.

To the immediate effect of this New Comet upon our Earth has been the massive and total disruption of our Global Weather Systems, and which these reports further state are directly related to ?Unknown Cosmic Bursts? emanating from this Massive Comet and seemingly ?beamed? directly towards our World.

Of the continued assault upon our Earth?s Atmosphere by these ?Unknown Blasts? we have likewise previously reported on, and their causing of Global Weather Chaos, and as evidenced by our December 22, 2004 report titled "Unknown Energy Surges Continue to Hit Planet, Global Weather Systems in Chaos" immediately prior to the Great Tsunami, and wherein we had stated:

?An increasingly panicked global effort is now underway by the worlds top scientists to understand an unprecedented series of ?blasts?, energy surges, which the planet has been taking from as an yet unknown source which has been bombarding Antarctica with cosmic rays and disrupting Northern Hemisphere weather systems on a global scale.

The first of these cosmic ray blasts occurred nearly 5 years ago and have been increasing in their frequency and intensity since the end of November. The once normally darkened skies of the Northern Hemispheres Arctic regions are now in twilight due to these blasts. Wayne Davidson, from the Canadian Government's weather station at Resolute Bay, located in the Arctic Circle, says about this mysterious lighting, "The entire horizon is raised like magic, like the hand of God is bringing it up.?

On December 1, 2004 the largest recorded blast sent not only shockwaves through the world scientific community but also through the Northern Hemisphere resulting in one of the largest weather events in recorded human history when 86,800 square miles of China was shrouded in fog, bringing transportation systems (especially air travel) to a virtual standstill throughout the country.?

In an almost virtual repeat of those events a year ago we now find the same precursor events occurring again in China, and as we can read as reported by the Xinhua News Service in their article titled "Sudden temperature drop freezes northern China" and which says:

"By 5:00 p.m., the temperature had dropped to minus 22 degrees Celsius and five drivers were frostbitten. The local government of Xingxingxia town in Xinjiang's Hami had huge packs of instant noodles sent to them from 210 kilometers away. Xingxingxia, a small town that can accommodate no more than 600 visitors, has been overcrowded and short of supplies ever since and many drivers still haven't got a hotel room by Monday morning.

The town was just one of the areas to suffer the sudden temperature drops in northern China. In Dalian, a beautiful seaside city in the northeastern Liaoning Province, the heaviest snow since 1951 put off 123 flights Sunday and laid over more than 4,000 passengers. School kids were told to stay home on Monday as fallen snow had added up to 28 centimeters in the city proper by 2:00 p.m. Sunday, almost knee-deep.

A cold front from Siberia, accompanied by strong gales, swept across most parts of northern China over the weekend, after an unprecedented long and warm autumn in the recent five decades.?

Also in the Atlantic Ocean regions these effects can be seen, and as we can read as reported by the ABC News Service in their article titled "Epsilon Maintains Hurricane Strength" and which says:

?Hurricane Epsilon just barely maintained hurricane strength early Monday as it lingered in the open Atlantic, posing no threat to land. The 26th named storm of a record-breaking hurricane season had top sustained winds near 75 mph, just above the threshold for a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Cooler waters, higher wind shear and drier air should cause Epsilon to gradually weaken, hurricane specialist Lixion Avila said."

Not being reported to the Western people about this Hurricane Epsilon though is that it gained its hurricane strength over the already ?cooler waters? of the Atlantic and is now in fact heading towards the much warmer waters of the Southern Atlantic on a course towards South America.

Even more surprising are that hurricanes do not even exist in the South America region, that is until this past year when what NASA scientists call the ?Nameless Storm? hit Brazil, and as we can read as reported by the NASA News Service in their article titled "The Nameless Hurricane" and which says:

"Naming hurricanes also helps prevent confusion. Sometimes there are two or more of the storms raging at the same time. Weather forecasters and storm trackers use names like Camille, Hugo and David to clarify which storm they're talking about. For these reasons, every hurricane gets a name. Always.

That is, until last week, on March 28th, when a nameless hurricane crashed into Brazil. The storm made landfall near Torres, a small town in the state of Santa Catarina about 500 miles south of Rio de Janeiro. "This really caught everybody off guard," says NASA hurricane researcher Robbie Hood. "Hurricanes aren't supposed to be in that part of the world."

Weather satellites have been circling Earth for more than 40 years. During that time they've spotted hurricanes (also called "typhoons" or "cyclones") in the northern Atlantic Ocean, and on both sides of the equator in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, but never before in the south Atlantic."

One of the strangest reports about this New Comet however comes from Russian Intelligence Analysts with the FSB, and which seemingly echos the warnings of the former Defense Minister of Canada who this past month issued an urgent warning to the world, and as we can read as reported by the Yahoo News Service in their article titled "Former Canadian Minister Of Defence Asks Canadian Parliament Asked To Hold Hearings On Relations With Alien "Et" Civilizations" and which says:

"On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canada?s Defence Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head." Mr. Hellyer went on to say, "I'm so concerned about what the consequences might be of starting an intergalactic war, that I just think I had to say something."

Hellyer revealed, "The secrecy involved in all matters pertaining to the Roswell incident was unparalled. The classification was, from the outset, above top secret, so the vast majority of U.S. officials and politicians, let alone a mere allied minister of defence, were never in-the-loop."

To the Western peoples being able to fully comprehend the implications this New Comet is bringing to our World is not to be as their Darwinian Mindsets do not allow them to think outside of their pre-determined parameters established by their Governments. But, to their Governments knowledge about these things there is not doubt, as with each passing day the freedoms these Western people once enjoyed are passing away and being replaced with Total Police State control, and which their Governments believe will be the only way to protect them in the face of the coming Catastrophic changes to be wrought upon our Earth.

To these Western peoples better protection from the horrific events soon to overtake us all perhaps they should become more the term ?Geomythology?, and which we can see described as reported by the Observer News Service in their article titled "Ancient legends give an early warning of modern disasters" and which says:

"The new science of geomythology is being harnessed by researchers who believe folklore can save lives. On the banks of Siletz Bay in Lincoln City, Oregon, officials dedicated a memorial last week to one of America's worst calamities: a huge earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands of Native Americans 300 years ago. But the memorial's main job is not to commemorate the disaster, which has only just come to light, but to warn local people that similar devastation could strike at any time.

The area sits over massive fault lines whose dangers have been highlighted by a startling new scientific discipline that combines Earth science studies and analysis of ancient legends. This is geomythology, and it is transforming our knowledge of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, says the journal Science. According to the discipline's proponents, violent geological upheavals may be more frequent than was previously suspected. Apart from the 'lost' Seattle earthquake, geomythology has recently revealed that a volcano in Fiji, thought to be dormant, is active, a discovery that followed geologists' decision to follow up legends of a mountain appearing overnight.

Geologists have found that Middle Eastern flooding myths, including the story of Noah, could be traced to the sudden inundation of the Black Sea 7,600 years ago. The Oracle at Delphi has been found to lie over a geological fault through which seeped hallucinogenic gases. These could account for the trances and utterances of the oracle's mystics. 'Myths can tell us a great deal about what happened in the past and were important in establishing what happened here 300 years ago,' said Brian Atwater, of the US Geological Survey in Seattle.

Along the Oregon and Washington coast, there are Native American stories about boulders, called a'yahos, which can shake to death anyone who stares at them. In addition, Ruth Ludwin, a seismologist in Seattle, discovered tales of villages being washed away and of whales and thunderbirds locked in fights. These stories were a key influence on Atwater, who started to study the 680-mile long Cascadia subduction zone fault along the coast. What he found provided a shock. Long stretches had suffered sudden inundation relatively recently.

The study of trees stumps in this drowned landscape indicated there had been a huge earthquake and a tsunami between 1680 and 1720. 'We didn't know whether it was one massive quake or a couple of slightly smaller ones. Nor did we know exactly when the disaster occurred,' added Atwater. Later research on tree rings put the date at between 1699 and 1700. Then local legends helped again. Japanese colleagues studied their records and traced an orphan tsunami - a giant wave not linked to a local earthquake - that destroyed several villages on 27 January, 1700.

'That told us two things: that our earthquake must have been vast, Richter scale 9, to devastate part of Japan thousands of miles away. It also gave us a precise date for our disaster.' Scientists now believe huge earthquakes and tsunamis devastate the Seattle area every 200 to 1,000 years. 'We may be due one soon,' added Atwater.

However, until this year, the lesson of that tsunami was remembered only as a dim legend. Other such stories have been put to better use, however.

Last year's tsunami was also triggered by a strong earthquake, and around 300,000 people died. The Moken - or sea gypsies - of Thailand, however, have a tradition which warns that when tides recede far and fast, now known as a precursor of a tsunami, then a man-eating wave will soon head their way: so they should run far and fast. Last 26 December, they did - and survived."

The most frightening of these reports however concern the direction in which this New Comet is headed?..towards our Earth itself.

MADRID (AFP) - More than 200,000 people remained without electricity on the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife after Tropical Storm Delta slammed the popular winter tourist spot, leaving at least seven dead before heading towards Morocco.

Regional justice minister Jose Miguel Ruano told reporters about 240,000 people had no power, most of them on Tenerife and the remainder on other islands in the chain, adding that it would be Friday before they were likely to be reconnected.

Ruano called on residents to save energy to allow what supplies were immediately available to be used where they were most needed.

"There will be cuts to allow essential public services, with hospitals, police, government offices and public buildings serving citizens' needs to take priority," he said.

Delta struck the archipelago with winds gusting at more than 150 kilometres (90 miles) per hour, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake Monday night before spinning off towards Morocco.

One man died Tuesday when he fell from his roof as he was trying to repair it.

The fatality took the casualty toll to seven with at least six sub-Saharan would-be immigrants having drowned in whipped-up seas Monday some 400 kilometres (250 miles) to the south of the islands.

Delta was the 25th storm of the year announced by the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC), which said that October's Vince was the first tropical storm on record to hit the Spanish coast.

Angel Riva, of Spain's National Meteorological Institute (INM), told AFP on Tuesday that "it's just not normal" that the storm should brew up out in the mid-Atlantic and then come east towards Europe.

Riva said an unusual pattern appeared to be emerging following Tropical Storm Vince hitting Spain last month as it left a trail of material damage.

"With Vince it was absolutely without precedent that it should come as far as the Spanish coast and now this year we have already had two phenomena of this type," he said.

Dr. Hwang Woo-suk, the South Korean scientist who has been leading an effort to clone human beings, is fighting off grave charges of ethical improprieties at his Mizmedi Hospital in Seoul. An American, Dr. Gerald Schatten, has pulled out of the project, pointing to the fact that many of the eggs used for the experiments were obtained unethically from female lab assistants and junior scientists. Roh Sung-il, the hospital's board chairman, has now admitted that he paid $1,400 each to some of the women because there were not enough voluntary donors. Perhaps the lack of "voluntary" donors can be attributed to a growing awareness of serious medical concerns about ovarian hyper-stimulation, the technique used to obtain the women's eggs.

Instances of stroke, heart attack, blood clots and even death have been reported in women whose eggs have been obtained using powerful drugs. In the U.S., the FDA has never approved most of the drugs for these procedures to extract multiple eggs. What this story shows us is that even in the highly public, highly touted experiments of a media darling, someone hailed as a "pioneer," the ethical abuses are gross--and growing. That is one more reason for the U.S. Congress to pass the Weldon-Stupak ban on cloning human beings (H.R. 1357). The Senate version is the Brownback-Landrieu bill (S.658). Both of these measures have bipartisan support. The UN General Assembly--at least in this one area--has correctly understood that "donations" of eggs, which will be needed for cloning and embryonic stem cell experiments, will inevitably lead to exploitation of women.

In just the past week, a statue has oozed blood in Sacramento, an image of the Guadalupe Virgin has been reported on a tree in the Dallas area, a statue of Christ Crucified was shedding blood in Cali, Colombia, and the Face of Jesus was discerned on a car in Laredo (again, Texas). In the case of Sacramento, where the phenomenon was reported at the Vietnamese Catholic Martyrs Church, the matter has been referred to the diocese for investigation (although the pastor, Father Jude Ban Nguyen, told Spirit Daily it has not yet been removed for such an inquiry and is now dry after repeated exudations). "I saw it myself, but I don't know if it's true or wrong," says Father Jude. In each such case, of course, comes the question of legitimacy. The explosion of alleged images has reached from the seemingly absurd -- on a tortilla or grilled-cheese sandwich -- to the majestic: towering statues shedding tears [above left] in places like Viet Nam. Which are real? And what might the real ones portend? Whenever statues weep, there is concern that events may be coming to those regions. Weeping statues long preceded the disaster in Louisiana. Whether it was related or unrelated, there was also a "miraculous" image on a tree in Manhattan before September 11. And so additional questions: Why so many in Texas? Why Sacramento, which is the capital of California? And why would there be such a strong Viet Nam connection? The statue in Sacramento is at a Vietnamese church at the same time that the large statue has shed tears at the cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City, making headlines around the world. It would seem that tears are not a sign of heavenly pleasure and that the involvement of alleged blood further accents that fact -- often interpreted as representing abortion, general sinfulness, or warfare. If legitimate, such phenomena raise haunting notions of what may be ahead and are multiplying at a time when there has been an historic upsurge in weather flux and natural disasters. In Cozumel, Mexico, an image of Jesus was spotted on a flower pot right after Hurricane Wilma devastated the area, coming in this case as great consolation. An image of Jesus also was reported last month in Rochester, New York. But images and statues are hardly the extent of it. Thousands of Catholics, again from around the world, are also reporting "promptings" in the Spirit which they interpret as God's way of warning us to prepare for something imminent -- however one may interpret "imminent," and however one may take the term "prepare." There are no statistics on how many are receiving such inklings -- no pollsters in this arena -- but the indications are obvious by the tone and number of e-mails sent to news websites such as this one as well as the spread of blogs carrying such "messages." Thousands of Catholics are receiving "visions" of looming disasters, are claiming to wake up at specific hours with the call to pray, and are reporting a step-up in spiritual conflict. This spread of the prophetic pulse to ordinary churchgoers is a decided shift from the 1980s and 1990s, when the focus of such phenomena was on individual seers at specific sites of apparition. But it is in accord with a striking message from Medjugorje itself -- where, in the spring of 1982, when asked why she was appearing in so many places, the Blessed Mother allegedly responded, "If it is necessary, I will appear in each home." How the Church will rule on many of the individual reports and on Medjugorje itself is currently up in the air. While Pope Benedict XVI reportedly visited Medjugorje when he was prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and at the behest of John Paul II prevented its rejection by a hostile local bishop, there is no indication of the Pope's current view at a time when the site has experienced increased criticism and when Franciscans, who operate Medjugorje, have been reined in elsewhere. Recently, the Madonna was said to shed tears during an apparition at Medjugorje and a statue of Christ Crucified has been exuding a strange oil-water substances for several years behind the church, a liquid that on a couple of occasions has turned red or has flowed from one of the corpus's eyes, according to recent reports. Meanwhile a statue from Medjugorje that oozed blood after it was taken to Civitavecchia, Italy has been declared a miracle by the Church. The spread of phenomena into individual homes has included claims in Sacramento of dozens of other such statues emanating fluid, and such has similarly been reported from Florida to Ontario, Canada, and as far away as Venezuela and Australia. Church authorities in Bogota, Columbia are studying a statue that reportedly began crying tears of blood during a Mass on Sunday.

The statue arrived four days ago in Cali to honor the assassination of a Monsignor in the church who died two years ago, Local 6 News reported.

MIAMI (AP) - The Atlantic hurricane season officially ended Wednesday, but Tropical Storm Epsilon could still cause dangerous surf conditions in Bermuda as it nears hurricane strength, forecasters said.

The 26th named storm of the busiest hurricane season was not expected to hit Bermuda or any other land, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

At 10 p.m. EST, Epsilon's top sustained winds were about 70 mph, up from 50 mph earlier in the day. It would become the 14th hurricane of the season if its winds reach 74 mph.

The storm was centered about 700 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. Forecasters said Epsilon was moving southeast at about 6 mph in a loop, but it was expected to eventually turn to the northeast.

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts six months.

Failing ocean current raises fears of mini ice age

The ocean current that gives western Europe its relatively balmy climate is stuttering, raising fears that it might fail entirely and plunge the continent into a mini ice age.

The dramatic finding comes from a study of ocean circulation in the North Atlantic, which found a 30% reduction in the warm currents that carry water north from the Gulf Stream.

The slow-down, which has long been predicted as a possible consequence of global warming, will give renewed urgency to intergovernmental talks in Montreal, Canada, this week on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.

Harry Bryden at the Southampton Oceanography Centre in the UK, whose group carried out the analysis, says he is not yet sure if the change is temporary or signals a long-term trend. "We don?t want to say the circulation will shut down," he told New Scientist. "But we are nervous about our findings. They have come as quite a surprise."

No one-off

The North Atlantic is dominated by the Gulf Stream ? currents that bring warm water north from the tropics. At around 40° north ? the latitude of Portugal and New York ? the current divides. Some water heads southwards in a surface current known as the subtropical gyre, while the rest continues north, leading to warming winds that raise European temperatures by 5°C to 10°C.

But when Bryden?s team measured north-south heat flow last year, using a set of instruments strung across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, they found that the division of the waters appeared to have changed since previous surveys in 1957, 1981 and 1992. From the amount of water in the subtropical gyre and the flow southwards at depth, they calculate that the quantity of warm water flowing north had fallen by around 30%.

When Bryden added previously unanalysed data ? collected in the same region by the US government?s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ? he found a similar pattern. This suggests that his 2004 measurements are not a one-off, and that most of the slow-down happened between 1992 and 1998.

The changes are too big to be explained by chance, co-author Stuart Cunningham told New Scientist from a research ship off the Canary Islands, where he is collecting more data. "We think the findings are robust."

Hot and cold

But Richard Wood, chief oceanographer at the UK Met Office?s Hadley Centre for climate research in Exeter, says the Southampton team's findings leave a lot unexplained. The changes are so big they should have cut oceanic heating of Europe by about one-fifth ? enough to cool the British Isles by 1°C and Scandinavia by 2°C. "We haven?t seen it yet," he points out.

Though unseasonably cold weather last month briefly blanketed parts of the UK in snow, average European temperatures have been rising, Wood says. Measurements of surface temperatures in the North Atlantic indicate a strong warming trend during the 1990s, which seems now to have halted.

Bryden speculates that the warming may have been part of a global temperature increase brought about by man-made greenhouse warming, and that this is now being counteracted by a decrease in the northward flow of warm water.

After warming Europe, this flow comes to a halt in the waters off Greenland, sinks to the ocean floor and returns south. The water arriving from the south is already more saline and so more dense than Arctic seas, and is made more so as ice forms.

Predicted shutdown

But Bryden?s study has revealed that while one area of sinking water, on the Canadian side of Greenland, still seems to be functioning as normal, a second area on the European side has partially shut down and is sending only half as much deep water south as before. The two southward flows can be distinguished because they travel at different depths.

Nobody is clear on what has gone wrong. Suggestions for blame include the melting of sea ice or increased flow from Siberian rivers into the Arctic. Both would load fresh water into the surface ocean, making it less dense and so preventing it from sinking, which in turn would slow the flow of tropical water from the south. And either could be triggered by man-made climate change. Some climate models predict that global warming could lead to such a shutdown later this century.

The last shutdown, which prompted a temperature drop of 5°C to 10°C in western Europe, was probably at the end of the last ice age, 12,000 years ago. There may also have been a slowing of Atlantic circulation during the Little Ice Age, which lasted sporadically from 1300 to about 1850 and created temperatures low enough to freeze the River Thames in London.
