Good news Earthlings, we survived a potential asteroid collision.
Back in August, NASA released a statement clearly stating that there would be no threat after rumors that a large asteroid would hit Earth went viral.
Millions of asteroids are rushing around us in space, posing a constant threat to human existence – should one head down and collide with earth, it could lead to such devastating destruction that we would perish, just like the dinosaurs did a few 65m years ago.
It’s the second time in the past few weeks that Earth stubbornly refused to cease to exist; ominous speculations surrounding the “blood moon” lunar eclipse of September 27-28 didn’t pan out, either. The ESA will launch a satellite to gather data on the asteroid, and then NASA will launch an enormous battering ram to hit the asteroid and hopefully nudge it off course.
The asteroid reportedly zoomed passed our planet at around 6.30am today, at a speed of 40,000 miles per hour.
NASA is also working on programs that may stop or redirect risky asteroids away from Earth.
