I have a Kindle App in my Android smartphone and can read in the dark with it. 

The ebooks I choose are downloaded directly into it, unless I choose otherwise.

The apps are free!  I have one in the computer, too. 

Believe it or not, there are also a lot of free Kindle ebooks,  and even more if you are a Prime member, which I am - so I'm going to get The Hunger Games and read it tonight under the bedcovers.
