About 6,600 We Energies customers remained without power late Wednesday after an outage that affected about 19,000 customers in Kenosha and Racine counties, officials with the utility said. Indian Trail Academy and Tremper High School in Kenosha opened as warming centers Wednesday night after the outage caused by an equipment failure at an American Transmission Company substation, officials said. The equipment at the substation belongs to ATC but power to customers is distributed through the We Energies power network, ATC spokeswoman Jackie Olson said. Indian Trail, 6800 60th St., and Tremper, 8560 26th Ave., opened at 8:15 p.m. for people without heat and their service animals, according to Kenosha police. The Salvation Army at 3116 75th St. in Kenosha also opened its doors to anyone needing a place to stay warm. Police service has not been affected by the outages, which are also affecting residents in Pleasant Prairie and Somers, according to police, who asked residents to check on family, friends and neighbors. Kenosha City Hall was also without power, prompting city officials to cancel Wednesday's City Council meeting, the Kenosha News reported. Kenosha and Racine counties are included a statewide wind chill advisory from the National Weather Service in Sullivan. The wind chill in Kenosha was already 7 degrees below zero at 8 p.m. and wind chills as low as 15 below were expected in the area Wednesday night, according to the weather service forecast.
