The epicenter of the earthquake was 131 km (82 miles) from Adak, Alaska and about 2054 km (1277 miles) from Anchorage, AK. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake registered at a depth of 40 km (25.2 miles) below the earth's surface. The earthquake struck 33 km south of the Tanaga volcano in Alaska. Tanaga is a 5,924-foot (1,806 m) stratovolcano in the Aleutian Range of the U.S. state of Alaska. There have been three known eruptions at the volcano since 1763.
