Global Rumblings: Sinkholes, one big as a house under Airport Runway

Geologists were called in to test three sink holes, one as big as a house, to see how much work needs to be done under the airport runways.

The runways at the Monroe County Airport appear to be in no immediate danger after sinkholes were discovered in May.

Geologists were called in to test three sinkholes, one as big as a house, to see how much work needs to be done under the airport runways. Airport director Bruce Payton says although the runways are safe for now, there is still cause for concern.

“The good thing about the situation is that we have a long time to plan and choose the right design that will be the most environmentally sensitive to what is happening below,” he said. “The underground aquifers that might be below, any sinkholes … any caves.”

Repairs could cost more than a million dollars. Payton will seek funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to pay for the fixes.
