A crater opened up in the eastern German town of Schmalkalden, forcing the removal of 25 residents from their homes. Residents reported hearing an unusual noise at about 3 a.m. on Monday were evacuated from the area but no was was injured. The giant sinkhole opened up a crater measuring 30 by 40 metres in the middle of a housing estate. Schmalkalden isa small town in Germany's central hill country, 120 kilometres northeast of Frankfurt. One car and a garage were lost to the collapse.
