Mount Etna in Sicily has begun spitting fire and ash in its first volcanic activity recorded in more than a year.

The fissure opened up in a previous crater on the southeastern slope, 700 meters below the summit, spewing lava and a cloud of black smoke. Local authorities say the eruption poses is currently no threat to residents.
Etna is the largest and most active volcano in Europe. Its last major eruption was recorded in 2001.
