'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

What famous American politician declared this in his/her book recently?  Is this just a 'politically correct' statement?  Am I showing ignorance by questioning the author's motives and meaning?  Is this a typo?  What would the author consider an 'ugly direction' to be in politics?

Does he/she still feel this way?  Why would we be wary of Muslims in politics anyway?  Why did we consider that Muslims attacked us on 9/11? Aren't they a peaceful religion?   Do Muslims practice freedom of speech in their countries?  Do they allow freedom of religion?  Do Islamic countries allow separation of religion and politics?  Why would this author favor Muslims over the general American public?

Does it show audacity on my part to question this?

In my dreams I never would have thought that an American politician would have the audacity of hope to stand with the Muslims in an ugly political wind.

But in my nightmares yes....the political wind is already very... ugly these days.
