Floods, Hurricanes, Rain- More Extremes 1st Week Oct.

All-time calendar-day rainfall records set at both Columbia (6.87 inches) and Charleston (Int'l Airport: 11.50 inches), South Carolina. 
- Possible 24-hour South Carolina state rain record, pending further investigation (previously 14.80 inches in Myrtle Beach during Hurricane Floyd).
- Record flooding, or flooding to levels not seen since Hurricane Floyd, or the early 20th century in some South Carolina locations.

2) Joaquin's October Intensity, Location

    3) Coastal Flooding For Days

    Flood waters enveloped this neighborhood in the Strathmere section of Upper Township N.J. on Friday Oct. 2, 2015.       - Some coastal flooding occurred over 8-10 high tide cycles from the Jersey shore to the Carolinas.
      - Highest tidal levels in Charleston Harbor since Hurricane Hugo on October 3.
      - Severe beach erosion on the Jersey shore.

      4) Flash Floods Swamp America's Driest Place

        - Record October 24-hour rainfall tied at Death Valley (0.55 inch from 8 a.m. Oct. 4 through 8 a.m. Oct. 5)
        - At the time, it was already the fourth wettest October on record, there.
        - Road damage throughout Death Valley National Park stranded visitors in Furnace Creek.

        5) Great Falls, Montana: Rain, Snow and a 24-Hour Record

        Just shy of four inches of snow had fallen in Great Falls, Montana, as of the morning of October 4, 2015. (National Weather Service - Great Falls, Montana)
          - Record October 24-hour precipitation (rain, melted snow) on Oct. 3-4, with 2.33 inches.
          - This was accompanied by the city's first snow: 3.7 inches.
          - Thanks to this, it was already the fourth wettest October in Great Falls, just four days into the month.

          6) Record-Smashing Central Pacific Season Rolls On

          Tracks of named storms (at least depression strength) in the northern hemisphere in 2015, as of October 6, 2015. 
            - Tropical Depression Seven-C, later to become Hurricane Oho, and Tropical Depression Eight-C increased the number of tropical cyclones in the central Pacific Basin to 13.

            7) Deadly Flash Floods Swamp French Riviera

              - Over 6.7 inches of rain in two hours, roughly two-months' worth of rain, sent a wave of flash flooding through southeast France this past weekend.

              8) Australia's Scorching Early-Spring Heat

                - Melbourne, Australia, reached a high of 35.8 degrees Celsius (96.4 degrees Fahrenheit), the first time they had reached 35 degrees C anytime in the first week of October in records dating to the mid-19th century.
                - Similarly, Adelaide, Australia, soared to a high of 35.6 degrees Celsius (96.1 degrees Fahrenheit), the hottest day so early in the season, there, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

                9) San Juan, Puerto Rico's Record Hot October Start


                  - The first five days of October were the warmest such period on record in San Juan, Puerto Rico, topping the previous record warm start set in 1981.
                  - Highs each day were from 93-95 degrees, with early morning lows from 79-83 degrees. 
                  - The city's rainfall deficit for 2015 through October 5 was 12.84 inches.

                  10) A Last-Minute Typhoon Spawns Tornadoes

                    - In 24 hours, "Mujigae" strengthened quickly from a tropical storm to a Category 4 typhoon, then slammed into far southern China.
                    A tornado spawned by Mujigae ripped through the Chinese city of Foshan, just northwest of Hong Kong on October 5. This was one of several killer tornadoes spawned in the rainbands of Mujigae.
